Posting Number: 2022968F Position Title: Assistant Teaching Professor of Geospatial Science Position Type: Faculty Location: Villanova, PA Recruitment Type: Internal/External Applicants Work Schedule: full-time/9-months Department: 181-Geography and the Environment Position Summary: The Department of Geography and the Environment at Villanova University invites applications for an Assistant Teaching Professor (continuing non-tenure track) position in Geospatial Science starting in August 2023. The position is 9-month academic appointment, and the incumbent will teach four courses per semester. The Department of Geography and the Environment serves as a multidisciplinary academic unit linking the social and natural sciences within the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and across the curriculum at Villanova University. The Department of Geography and the Environment offers B.S. and M.S. degrees in Environmental Science and B.A. degrees in Geography and Environmental Studies. The Department’s overarching objective is to integrate the disciplines of geography and environmental science in seeking to understand the spatial patterns of human systems and landscapes, environmental processes, and the effects of people on the environment. We foster an atmosphere of open dialogue and incorporate innovative classroom instruction, creative laboratory and field experiences, and student-led research to ensure a high quality of learning and teaching. Our goal is to develop students and faculty who engage in and are dedicated to critical thinking, open-ended problem solving, and a lifetime of learning. Our new colleague should have experience in, or the potential for, building an equitable and diverse scholarly environment in teaching, mentoring, research, life experiences, or service.

We seek a colleague to teach in the geospatial, geographical, and environmental sciences to support the growth of the Department’s graduate and undergraduate programs. Our new colleague will broaden the scope of expertise among the faculty, expand the teaching opportunities within the Department, and contribute to excellence across our programs. Our new colleague will develop and teach geospatial lecture and laboratory science courses for undergraduate Geography, Environmental Science, and Environmental Studies majors and graduate students in the M.S. in Environmental Science program. A Ph.D. in geography, geospatial science, environmental science, or related field is required; ABD candidates will be considered, though a PhD is required at the start of the appointment. Successful candidates will demonstrate the ability to teach introductory and upper-level Geographic Information Systems (GIS) courses as well as applied geospatial courses. GIS courses are required across all undergraduate majors as well as the graduate program in the Department, and we are especially interested in candidates who promote interdisciplinary understanding across the geospatial, geographical, and environmental sciences. While this is largely a teaching position, our colleague will be invited to undertake collaborative research and student mentoring. Willingness to work collaboratively with faculty and to mentor students from a wide range of disciplines, cultures, and academic backgrounds is essential. We are especially interested in candidates whose teaching will contribute to the Department’s commitment to diversity and academic excellence, whose teaching holds the promise of incorporating geospatial technologies to complement the geographical and environmental sciences, and who will enhance the Department’s academic programs. The successful candidate will provide evidence of teaching effectiveness and compelling plans to develop student–professor research partnerships. Opportunity for promotion to Associate Teaching Professor and Full Teaching Professor exist with demonstrated excellence and leadership in teaching, ongoing engagement with their professional discipline, and service to the institution.
