Responsibilities Incumbent services as the Education Technician "Working Team Leader", in a Coast Guard Child Development Center (CDC). In that capacity, the incumbent will provide oversight and leadership of CDC direct caregivers and teachers in the care and education of children ages 6 weeks to 12 years. Services as a primary substitute in the absence of scheduled direct care staff. Skills in communicating effectively and at appropriate levels with children, parents, staff, and supervisor about a variety of subject matters relating to the early childhood field. Knowledge of child development norms, behaviors, growth, and progress necessary to accomplish assigned duties and responsibilities which promote a child's physical, social emotional, creative, and intellectual growth and development. Provides appropriate, specialized developmental care and instruction for children enrolled in CDC. Performs daily planning activities and provides oversight in a designated classroom. Plans and/or organizes activities for holidays and other special occasions. Works with parents to promote understanding of their child's growth and development and encourages parent's participation in center whenever possible. Maintains records of progress in areas such as growth and motor skills development. Prepares progress reports for each child to meet scheduled requirements and discusses reports with the director and the child's parents or guardians. Observes and reports significant individual and group behavior of children to management and parents. Conducts parent/teacher conferences and works with parents whenever possible to promote an understanding of the growth and development of their child. Encourages parent participation in school programs and attends parent group and other school functions. Participates in recommended training programs, conferences, courses, and other activities aimed at promoting professional growth. Maintains files of approved programs of instruction, to include updating and maintaining training. requirements for direct childcare staff. Monitors each assigned room to ensure operations and developmental care is provided IAW with CG policies, procedures, and accreditation standards. Assists training and curriculum specialists with specialized tasks for on-going staff training. Training which is unique and specific to the field of early childhood education. Performs other duties as assigned. Selectee will be required to provide a written statement regarding his registration status unless he is exempted by this statute. Must satisfactorily complete a Federal Background check. Qualifications Minimum: Professional knowledge of the goals, principles, objectives, practices, and theories of early childhood education acquired through formal education or a combination of education and experience equivalent to a major in child development or early childhood educational specialties. Knowledge of child development norms, behaviors, growth, and progress necessary to implement meaningful activities. Assigned duties and responsibilities which promote a child's physical, social, emotional, creative, and intellectual. growth and development. Ability to satisfactorily complete background investigation - National Agency Check with Written Inquires (NACI), upon hiring and renew every 5 years. Ability to satisfactorily complete a health assessment, upon hiring and renewed every 2 years. Valid Driver's license. Must be capable of lifting up to 40 pounds. Preferred (in addition to the minimum): Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in education, or in a subject-matter field appropriate to the position, plus appropriate experience or additional course work that provided knowledge comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of the 4-year course of study described above.
