JOB SUMMARY

UIC Internship Program

The Internship Program is designed to provide high school graduates and college students with a structured work and learning opportunity.  Learning activities will include a bi-weekly lecture series which include; research, on-the-job training, job-shadowing and completion of special projects.  Students will engage in different activities according to their department placement that is aligned with their career goals or aspirations.

As a project Intern, you will be required to support construction activities by implementing the following: planning, organizing and implementing those management duties, project controls systems, engineering interface, subcontract and materials management, purchasing and scheduling. Responsible for portions of project administration.

The Internship Program is available to high school graduates and college students.

Eligibility Requirements for Interns:

Preferable to be one of the following:UIC ShareholderDescendant of a UIC ShareholderMust be 18 years of age or older.Must be enrolled at an accredited college or university with the following:Minimum of 9 creditsMinimum GPA 2.0

The student must demonstrate they are “well-qualified” throughout the selection process and will be placed within the organization based upon their interests, business needs and available resources.

Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug screen in compliance with UIC’s Non-DOT Drug & Alcohol Program.

No previous experience required.

Qualifications

Required Experience:

One year of experience in heavy civil or vertical construction or two or more years of training in engineering related field such as civil engineering or construction management. Familiarity with job cost tracking. Experience with Microsoft word, excel, and power point. Knowledge of construction materials and practices.Familiarity of P6 or Microsoft Projects Scheduling Software

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to read text on a computer screen and in hard copy, stand or sit, talk, and hear. The employee is frequently required to enter information into computers via a keyboard or other peripheral device. Exposure to moderate levels of noise in a well-lit, well-ventilated and moderately paced environment. Continuously required to sit, hear and/or respond to verbal/audio cues, perform repetitive motions of hands and wrists, and read computer screen. Continuously required to stand or walk. Occasionally required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, twist, bend, or reach with hands and arms. Occasionally required to push, pull and/or carry objects up to 50 pounds.

Environmental Conditions:

The work environment is that of a typical project site office.Travel to construction site will be required.Often jobsites are located in rural areas.

If working on a DOT project, employees must pass a DOT pre-employment drug screening and follow all DOT Drug and Alcohol Testing Program requirements.
