MCI - Functional Safety Design Specialist

POSITION SUMMARY

As a Functional Safety Design Specialist, you will be accountable for completion of engineering design tasks/reviews and project support from concept to implementation as it pertains to the on-going implementation and establishment of vehicle functional safety best practices within the New Flyer and MCI business units.  Reporting to the Engineering Lead for functional safety, you will ultimately help to develop and implement our vehicle functional safety to be in line with ISO 26262 standards as well as other functional safety features as needed and identified for both internal and external customer requirements.

WHAT YOU WILL DO:

Execute and complete functional safety design support tasks and project assignments in support of prototyping/testing & product development activities per Engineering functional safety product development processes.Coordinate own tasks to ensure deadlines are met per project schedule and applicable lead times. Includes maintaining task status, task progress and communicating risks to task scope change.Perform functional safety assessments/analysis to ensure compliance with internal process criteria and all applicable standards and regulations.Check Engineering Documents, Instructions to Service, Shop Floor Instructions and other documents as applicable and authorized.Assist Engineering teams in formulating plans, item definitions and requirements to support functional safety initiatives.Undertake functional safety activities in the development phases of the safety lifecycle and the Engineering Product Development process.Collaborate with engineering design teams and deliver functional safety work products while also aiding, guiding, and supporting to ensure they are actioned.Review the compliance and alignment with customer and supplier programs.Conduct effective communication, cooperation, and information flow with other departments and key NFI Group contacts.Interact with vendors and customers on functional safety related issues as needed.Participate in Engineering and other meetings to review departmental issues.Develop documents and maintains meeting architecture including regular reviews while ensuring corrective actions are taken and implemented.Report weekly on status including completed and outstanding work.Complete and support the development, design, & testing of functional safety critical systems and controls.Support establishing new engineering processes and procedures, tools and documentation based upon implementing IS26262.

WHAT YOU NEED TO BE SUCCESSFUL:

Bachelors in Engineering (Preferred in Electrical/Software/Mechanical Engineering) or equivalent.Experiences and knowledge of ISO 26262 standards and work product implementation would be considered an asset.Experience & knowledge (but not limited) of FMEA, FMEDA, FHA, HAZOP, FTA would be considered an asset.Strong problem solving and analytical skills. Familiarity with hardware and software of commercial vehicle control systems preferred.Excellent project and planning abilities.Excellent interpersonal and communications skills.
