Process Engineer II - Packaging

Overview Applies engineering knowledge, statistics, and ingenuity to designs, integrates, and improves manufacturing process systems associated with packaging equipment. The primary focus for this position will be on packing equipment for the dressings/sauces and baking industry. Responsibilities Essential Functions/Primary Responsibilities: Develop packaging automation solutions that will lead to best-in-class performance on network packaging lines. Work with vendors and internal packaging teams to determine next generation technology and create roadmaps for testing and implementation. Specifies methods, process steps, and equipment required to execute a new or improve an existing manufacturing process with a focus on packing equipment in the liquid packaging and baking industry. Drive initial technical scope, equipment schedule, cost, preliminary design, and line KPI’s for new line installs and equipment purchases. Work with operations and automation teams to improve current packaging equipment performance, reliability, and quality. Supports project start up, commissioning, and validation as needed to ensure vertical startups on packaging equipment. Troubleshoots the root causes of common-cause and special cause variance. This includes functioning as an SME in packaging equipment RCA’s. Recommends changes in designs or methods using statistical analysis. Support the capital planning process through recommendations and cost estimates for prioritized projects. Partners internally with cross-functional teams and manufacturing personnel, and externally with suppliers and consultants to identify and develop solutions to manufacturing problems. Benchmarks internally and externally. Works closely with R&D packaging development group to determine the effects of packaging material on machine and line performance. Leads the development of design requirements by understanding product formulation, equipment design standards, customer requirements, and performance standards. Often supports Capital Project Managers in the identification and selection of packaging equipment solutions. Leads alternative analysis comparisons between those potential solutions. Works with the project teams to develop commissioning and qualification execution strategies with a focus on defining intended use and measuring process capability against critical quality acceptance criteria. Qualifications BS degree in engineering or a technical field is required, preferably in mechanical, chemical, or food engineering. Minimum of 8 years of prior experience in process design or manufacturing engineering. Experience reading P&IDs and using Microsoft Office software is required. Understanding of automation systems and controls integration is required. CPG, nutritional, or food processing experience is preferred. Experience with continuous improvement, Lean, or Six Sigma Technical Skills Extensive experience in design and implementation of packaging equipment including but not limited to: packaging material handling, filling, case packing, palletizing, printing, labeling, sleeving, bottle handling, and line integration. Engineering Technology: Works without supervision to provide technical guidance regarding new and advanced engineering technologies and specifications. Engineering Design: Able to leverage the appropriate methods, tools, processes and software for Engineering Design, including but not limited to modeling software to understand line balancing and performance. Engineering Technical Operations Support: Provides technical guidance when identifying and diagnosing operational problems and developing solutions to resolve issues. Compliance: Uses comprehensive knowledge and skills to act independently to achieve full compliance with applicable rules and regulations. Working Conditions/Environment Works in a normal office environment where the employee is regularly required to speak, see, hear, sit, stand, talk, type, walk and bend while moving about the facility. Frequent (25-40%) travel to plant locations in the U.S., as well as vendor locations globally. The noise level in the office is quiet.
