The Associate Special Effects Designer is an entry level position to support the development and show maintenance of Practical Special Effects including Fire, Light, Projection, Water, Air, Gas, and Visual effects including Projection to create environments otherwise not realizable in a physical manner. This person works directly with the DSQ Technical Manager and under the supervision of the Special Effects leader responsible for achieving and maintaining the creative vision of WDI/DSQ Art Directors and translating these designs intent into reality, as well as maintain ongoing special effects across Shanghai Disney Resort and help develop concept for new projects. This candidate must have basic understanding of the design process, work well with other disciplines in a collaborative environment
What You’ll Do
Must have knowledge of the Walt Disney Company heritage and Shanghai Disney ResortWork with DSQ senior Special Effect Designer with reporting line to DSQ Technical managerSupports and contributes to Special Effects projectsBasic knowledge in the development and show maintenance of Practical Special Effects including Fire, Light, Projection, Water, Air, Gas, and Visual effects including Projection to create environmentsReviews ongoing Special Effects across Shanghai Disney Resort. Follows the DSQ show review format twice a year for every attraction (in depth review after park close), and ride through reviews from guest perspective.Liaises with maintenance partners (AES) for access to attraction during show review period, communicates findings with technicians, assists in the troubleshooting where needed and provides support sourcing, mock up and testing substitution for obsolete systems and components.Liaises with global WDI/DSQ teams for interdisciplinary exchange.Project scope - Supports on assignments of moderate complexity from concept to completionCommunicates and interacts with all levels of individuals within the project environmentInterfaces with Project Managers and other creative leadsPartners with team leaders to organize proof of concept mock-ups and document the resultsSupports Senior Special Effects Designer for all creative deliverables, including scope, schedule and budgetCollaborates with team leadership to prioritize scope and delivery optionsPromotes strong team building by developing solid relationships with multiple partners at multiple levelsWorks effectively with outside special effects vendorResearch information and technologies in support of design effortProficiency in Research toolsAbility to organize multiple layers of documentationWhat To Bring:
BA/BS in theater, film, design or entertainment is preferred.1-3 years of Disney experience or related (Attraction, Theater, Water Effects, etc…)Basic working knowledge of Special Effects design and technical knowledge of specific discipline, including methods of construction.Basic knowledge and experience with other theatrical technologies, i.e. – lighting, effects, audio, set design and construction, etc.Previous theme park, film and/or theater production experienceStrong verbal and written communication skills (Chinese & English)Good knowledge of computer systems, databases and documentation proceduresComputer proficiency with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PhotoShop, and the InternetProficiency with CAD drafting programs both 2D and 3D (familiarity with Navisworks, Solidworks, Revit preferred)Laser Safety, Flame Safety, Pyrotechnic Safety preferredKnowledge of facility design (architecture, interiors, graphics, etc.)Basic knowledge of Ride SystemsKnowledge of Special Effects equipment and vendors.Job Posting Segment:
