Posting Number: 20254262S Position Title: 1st Class HVAC Technician- Cabrini Campus Position Type: Staff Location: Villanova, PA Recruitment Type: Internal/External Applicants Work Schedule: full-time/12-months Avg Hours Week Department: 826 - Cabrini HVAC Position Summary: Under minimum supervision, operates, maintains, and troubleshoots building Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration (HVACR) systems and equipment in order to provide a comfortable and safe environment in all University facilities including: classrooms, laboratories, offices, student residences, and refrigerators and freezers in accordance with applicable standards of the trade and regulatory agencies.

Duties and Responsibilities: a. Operates, maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs, as required, building HVACR equipment consistent with manufacturer’s guidelines, operating design parameters, and accepted practices to optimize energy use.
b. Installs HVACR units, including electronic, electrical, and mechanical components and connections.
c. Installs HVACR ductwork including flexible tubing and sheet metal construction.
d. Troubleshoots and repairs HVACR units including electronic, electrical, and mechanical components and connections.
e. Installs, maintains, and repairs computerized electronic, pneumatic, and direct digital control (DDC) devices related to HVACR control.
f. Maintains and makes operating repairs on electrical equipment and appliances, on oil and gas equipment, on refrigerators/freezers and ice makers, and on other refrigeration equipment.
g. Operates and keeps in good working order a variety of equipment including hand tools, mobile electronic devices, measuring/diagnostic/testing meters, and instruments.
h. Conserves, installs, recycles, and reclaims refrigerants. i. Reads and interprets complex blueprints, sketches, schematics, and wiring diagrams.
j. Performs brazing, silver and lead soldering, pipefitting, welding, and fabrication as required.
k. Performs various carpentry, masonry, painting, and plastering work as required.
l. Coordinates repairs with other trades affected by HVAC operations. m. Assists in furniture and event set ups and breakdowns, decorations for special functions, meetings, etc.
n. Performs other duties as assigned within the normal scope of the department’s responsibilities and the individual’s capabilities Minimum Qualifications: a. HS diploma or equivalent and current documentation indicating current successful completion of formal training classes or programs and be able to exhibit acceptable life experiences in HVACR work
b. Possess EPA Universal/R410A license.
c. Is currently classified and working as HVAC Technician 2nd Class and meets and maintains all qualifications for HVAC Technician 2nd Class.
d. A minimum of five years of service in the trade at Villanova University (upon the discretion of Facilities Management.)
e. Must possess and maintain personal hand tools required for the trade.
f. Must have the ability to research information, from various sources, to facilitate repairs of campus HVAC/R equipment i.e., campus technical manuals, as built prints, equipment supply distributors, and internet websites, etc.
g. Must have the ability to recover, recycle, and reclaim refrigerants adhering to HVAC/R industry standards, specifications, and protocols.
h. Must have the ability to record all refrigerant loss/charge amounts and manufacturer information on TMA work order, when servicing campus HVAC/R equipment.
i. Must have the ability to perform preventative maintenance on all campus HVAC/R equipment using the campus work order system, visual inspection, verbal, or written instruction etc.
j. Must have the ability to properly lubricate, repair, replace, and align both direct and indirect mechanical drive components, for all campus HVAC/R equipment.
k. Must have the ability to lubricate, repair, replace all pumps serving campus HVAC/R equipment.
l. Must have the ability to verify proper operation of chilled/heating water hydronic generation equipment such as Centrifugal, Screw, Scroll, and Reciprocating Chillers, Gas and Oil-fired boilers. m. Must be capable of troubleshooting equipment control panels locally.
n. Must have the ability to troubleshoot and repair all central heating/cooling air distribution systems.
o. Must have the ability to troubleshoot, repair or replace all associated components of the campus chilled/heating hydronic water distribution systems.
p. Must have the ability to verify steam pressure is available to all campus heat exchangers, where applicable.
q. Must have the ability to install, secure, repair or replace all associated components of the campus air distribution systems, to optimize airflow and structural stability.
r. Must have the ability to troubleshoot and repair all Electric heat sources throughout the campus i.e., reheat, air handler, auxiliary, and baseboard heating coils.
s. Must have the ability to diagnose, troubleshoot, isolate, repair or replace all associated components of direct expansion/refrigeration systems, supporting a wide variety of applications throughout the campus.
t. Must have the ability to implement several pipefitting techniques to facilitate repairs of campus HVAC/R equipment i.e., pipe threading, brazing, lead and silver soldering. Where applicable, must recover, pressurize, evacuate, and charge refrigerant properly to ensure HVAC/R equipment integrity.
u. Must have the ability to comprehend all control system components from source through end devices.
v. Must have the ability to comprehend: direct digital control, pneumatic, electropneumatic, electronic, electric, and electro-mechanical controls.
w. Must have the ability to follow both verbal and written directions in English; the ability to interact with students, faculty, administration, and staff in a professional and positive manner, as well as the ability to read and understand OSHA guidelines such as Material Safety Data Sheets, equipment safety data plates, fuel/chemical flash points, etc.
x. Must have the ability to read and interpret schematics, wiring diagrams, blueprints, and sequence of operations to diagnose proper operation of campus HVAC/R equipment.
y. Must have the physical ability to climb ladders, to bend, reach, crawl, and lift up to 60 lbs.; the ability to work in enclosed spaces.
z. Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license.
aa. Must not have any disciplinary actions on file within the previous twelve months of applying for this position.
bb. Must possess current ANSI/OSHA compliant training card to operate aerial lift, bucket truck, forklift, or all.
cc. Must have the ability to erect and work on scaffolding as per OSHA standards.
dd. Must have an excellent safety record. Preferred Qualifications: Physical Requirements and/or Unusual Work Hours: Must have the physical ability to climb ladders, to bend, reach, crawl, and lift up to 60 lbs; the ability to work in enclosed spaces. Core hours are from 7:30 until 4:00. Coming in earlier or staying later would be expected If emergency repairs are required. Special Message to Applicants: Applicants must take a timed (1.5hrs) 135 question pre-qualification exam. All needed formulas for the exam questions will be given with exam. Following the exam, a verbal panel style interview will be conducted lasting approximately 1 hour.
