The program connects students to professional opportunities through paid internships, peer-to-peer networking sessions, and community based learning. Program participants are placed with government entities, non-profit agencies, and private organizations to gain experience in high-demand occupations to attract San Antonio's graduating professionals to career opportunities within the local community. Participation in this program is not employment with the City of San Antonio. Work locations will vary based on employer partner opportunities. HISTORY: The Ambassador Summer Internship Program was launched in the summer of 2004 through an initiative presented by then-District 7 Councilman Julián Castro. The program received the Texas Workforce Innovation Award in 2005. Ambassador Interns are enrolled in colleges and universities throughout San Antonio and the country. Students are placed in internship positions in governmental, non-profit, and for-profit entities to provide meaningful "on the job" experience for interns. Essential Job Functions WHAT STUDENTS CAN EXPECT FROM AN AMBASSADOR INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY: + Explore private, Non-Profit, and government jobs by working for one of our employer partners for 30 hours per week over an eight-week period from June 16 through August 8, 2025. + Gain technical and professional experience. + Build social/professional networks with employers and peers. + Participate in peer-to-peer sessions and community-based learning. Job Requirements To apply for an Ambassador Internship, applicants must meet all of the following criteria: + Must have completed at least one full year (two semesters) of college. + Must be currently enrolled in college. + Must be a San Antonio high school graduate or enrolled in a college/university in San Antonio. + Must be a permanent resident of San Antonio (special provisions will be made for anyone experiencing unstable housing and meet City of San Antonio criteria). + Must be eligible to work in the United States. + Must demonstrate and maintain at least a 2.5 grade point average (GPA). Experience cannot be substituted for any of the program requirements. One year of full-time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months. One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university. + Applicants selected for employment with the City of San Antonio in this position must receive satisfactory results from pre-employment drug testing and background checks. If required for the position, a physical, motor vehicle record evaluation, and additional background checks may be conducted.
