2025 KMBC Intern - News

The KMBC 9 / KCWE 29 Internship Program is a paid, rigorous and highly competitive hands-on experience that provides individuals the opportunity to learn about the operations of a broadcast television station. As a news intern, you are part of the team that’s “Leading the Way” in Kansas City.  For every person you see on camera, there are many more with exciting responsibilities in the KMBC 9 Newsroom.  You’ll gain experience writing, editing, producing, and reporting the news. The veteran journalists leading the way at KMBC 9 News will give interns a chance to try their hand in the following aspects of the news operation. You will report to the News Director.

REPORT & PHOTOGRAPHY

Work with reporters and photographers to develop, shoot, write and edit stories for broadcast. Shoot standups, write and produce stories for demo-reels. Receive feedback from Anchors, reporters, photographers, and managers on your work. Work on the fast-paced assignment desk finding breaking news and other stories.

PRODUCING

Learn how producers create shows that are compelling, creative, and valuable to the viewer. Practice creating effective teases that hold the audience’s attention. Participate in editorial and planning meetings. Observe live production of newscasts from the control room.

FIRST ALERT WEATHER

Learn the tools and techniques used to create informative forecasts. Possibly participate in any severe weather coverage. Practice forecasting using state of the art tools and chroma key. Help meteorologists put together broadcasts.

DIGITAL MEDIA

Work with producers on Kansas City’s top digital and social platforms. Learn how digital content is created and delivered. Create content that could appear on KMBC.COM and other digital platforms.

You will also have the chance to participate in a KMBC “Intern newscast”. Whether you want to produce, anchor, report or forecast, the “Intern newscast” is your chance to work with other interns to create a newscast you can use to build your demo-reel.

Your first day at the station is set aside for orientation which Must be attended.  Plan to work three days a week, eight hours each shift with varying schedules. During your internship you should always check in with your assigned advisor upon entering the building. In-person attendance is required.

Securing housing and transportation during the internship are the responsibility of the intern.  KMBC 9 / KCWE 29 cannot offer support in this area.
