Product Development, Science and Technology (PDS&T) Intern Overview

The Operations Product Development, Science and Technology (PDS&T) is the intersection of technical excellence and business impact. We are champions of product innovation and process knowledge to solve AbbVie's most complex technical challenges to successfully support late-phase products, commercialize our pipeline, ensure the quality and efficacy of our products, and make a direct impact on patient health and well-being.
One of the core deliverables of Pharmaceutical Product Group is to develop robust processes to manufacture small molecule drug products utilizing strong scientific and engineering fundamentals. In this role, the intern will work closely with formulation scientists and process engineers to explore assessment tools of interfacial interaction between powder and metal surfaces, and potentially develop prototype formulations for robust pharmaceutical manufacturing processes. The ideal candidate will have experience in one or more areas including powder technology, interfacial physical interactions between powder and metal, and sticking on metal surfaces.
This internship position is located in North Chicago, IL.
Key responsibilities include:
+ Perform laboratory experiments and analyze experimental data to support research understanding and optimization.
+ Regularly summarize and update findings, and present comprehensively at the end of the internship.
+ Address challenging problems involved in experimental model (apparatus) development.
+ Exhibit a collaborative nature in identifying challenges and communicating findings and recommendations effectively by multi-disciplinary interactions with formulation scientists and process engineers.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
+ Currently enrolled in university, pursuing a PhD in Materials Science and Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Pharmaceutical Sciences, or other related field.
+ Must be enrolled in university for at least one semester following the internship.
Preferred Qualifications
+ Expected graduation date between December 2025 – June 2026.
+ Prior experience in powder technology and process development.
+ Familiarity with operation of pharmaceutical process equipment and systems.
+ Working knowledge of techniques such as ring shear tester, rheometer, powder rheometer, tribometer, sticking assessment.
