2025 Summer Intern, Building Energy Modeling (Masters, Remote or Hybrid)

Description

We are hiring for a Building Energy Modeling intern to work in our DER Analytics practice. You will contribute to the enhancement of analytical capabilities of the team, develop subject matter expertise in DER technologies (i.e., energy efficiency, demand response, solar and storage to name a few) and help utilities and/or government agencies boost their DER programs to meet the demands of the future. As part of your role, you will have the opportunity to apply your academic knowledge while interacting with experts and clients in the field. Our interns are provided with training to develop both non-technical and technical consulting skills in an environment that is designed to foster growth.

This is a full-time 10-week internship program that begins in early June 2025 and ends in early August. Individuals may work remotely from any U.S. location (or can be hybrid if located in the DC/MD/VA area). We are unable to offer relocation nor housing assistance at this time.

Key Responsibilities

Utilize residential and commercial Building Energy Modeling (BEM) to help clients answer pressing questions about flexible load management, such as what the hourly load and carbon impacts are of DER technologies not yet widely deployed in their territory

Conducting novel energy efficiency and decarbonization analyses based on large scale BEM analysis frameworks, often leveraging existing work such as NREL’s ResStock and ComStock and building upon it

Assist with Distributed Energy Resource (DER) potential studies, DER program planning, preparation of DER fillings and other regulatory support for US utilities and/or government agencies.

Help develop advanced analytical frameworks for large scale optimization and sensitivity analysis based on tools such as Python and R

Manage and analyze large datasets using, Python, R or advanced Excel functions depending on the requirements of the project

Assist in the preparation and presentation of persuasive presentations

Co-author reports and other client deliverables, presenting results internally and potentially externally

Work on project teams to complete complex tasks and deliver projects on time and on budget​

Basic Qualifications

Currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Architectural Engineering or related field (with an anticipated graduation of August 2025 or later).

Preferred Skills/Experience

Strong quantitative and analytical skills, including knowledge of basic programming

A passion for the energy industry, with specific interest in DERs

Experience with data handling in advanced Excel

Experience with energy modeling tools (e.g., OpenStudio, EnergyPlus)

Ensures that information flows effectively to others

Identifies, collects, and analyzes the information needed to solve a problem effectively

Clearly expresses ideas, thoughts, and concepts in writing

Strong writing and communication skills, and ability to organize written work in a manner that is clear, easy to follow, and tailored for the intended audience

Demonstrates trustworthiness and upholds the highest ethical standards

Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment

Pay Range - There are multiple factors that are considered in determining final pay for a position, including, but not limited to, relevant work experience, skills, certifications and competencies that align to the specified role, geographic location, education and certifications as well as contract provisions regarding labor categories that are specific to the position.

The pay range for this position based on full-time employment is:

$39,435.00 - $67,040.00
