2025 Summer Intern - Catalyst/Scientific Insights and Engineering

At Genentech Research & Early Development (gRED) we have initiated an exciting journey to bring together and further strengthen our computational talent and capabilities by forming a new, central organization - gRED Computational Sciences (gCS).

The Computational Catalysts group within gCS is a diverse, curious and action-driven team at the intersection of computation, engineering and science with ambition to advance our technical excellence.  The focus of the team is on partnering with the informatics and scientific communities to create a computational and data ecosystem that powers scientific discovery and accelerates decision making.  We aim to modernize our ability to acquire, store, link, share, find and analyze data across the organization through scalable and integrated solutions that truly make every data point count.

This internship position is located in South San Francisco, CA, on-site

The Opportunity

Create a benchmarking framework for the evaluation of statistical tools  for CROP-seq and Perturb-seq analysis.

Implement data visualizations allowing us to compare the performance of different analysis methods.

Automate such Benchmarks using Nextflow to reproduce or evaluate new methods.

Program Highlights

 Intensive 12-weeks / full-time (40 hours per week) paid internship.

Program start dates are in May/June (Summer) 

A stipend, based on location, will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship. 

Ownership of challenging and impactful business-critical projects.

Work with some of the most talented people in the biotechnology industry. 

Who You Are 

Required Education 

Must be pursuing a Master's Degree  or a PhD (enrolled student)

Required Skills: 

Proficiency with R, and data visualization frameworks like ggplot2

Experience with the use of HPC clusters like slurm or lsf.

Experience with the analysis of single-cell RNA-seq.

Experience with pipelining tools like Snakemake or Nextflow

Willingness to learn

Required majors:

Computer Science, Engineering, Data Science, Computational Biology or related fields.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Qualifications

Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.

Relocation benefits are not available for this job posting. 

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of  California is $50.00 hour.  Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. This position also qualifies for paid holiday time off benefits.
