2025 Summer Intern - Functional Genomics - Hub of In-Vitro Excellence

Department Summary

As part of Genentech Research & Early Development (gRED), the Functional Genomics department is at the forefront of developing novel therapies for patients. This position will be a unique opportunity to be exposed to the early drug discovery process from the intersection of complex human cell culture, automation engineering, and process development at the Hub of In-Vitro Excellence (HIVE).

This internship position is located in South San Francisco, on-site.

The Opportunity

Optimize iPSC (induced pluripotent stem cells) culture to drive successful and clinically relevant differentiation outcomes.

Assist in the development and validation of automation methods to scale up cell culture.

Contribute to the development of AI/ML pipelines to establish automated evaluation of QC metrics in cell culture.

Support upkeep and maintenance of lab automation machines.

Design, execute, and interpret experiments and present data to scientists across the organization.

Keep an accurate and timely record of research findings and progress.

Program Highlights

Intensive 12-weeks full-time (40 hours per week) paid internship.

Program start dates are in May/June (Summer).

A stipend, based on location, will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship. 

Ownership of challenging and impactful business-critical projects.

Work with some of the most talented people in the biotechnology industry.

Who You Are (Required)

Required Education: You meet one of the following criteria:

Must be pursuing a Bachelor's Degree (enrolled student).

Must have attained a Bachelor's Degree (not currently enrolled in a graduate program). 

Must be pursuing a Master's degree.

Required Majors: Biology, Cell Biology, Bioengineering, Biochemistry, or related disciplines.

Required Skills

At least 3 months of mammalian cell culture and molecular biology experience, iPSC culture is highly preferred.

Presentation of scientific work to small (or large) forums.

Ability to work and communicate cross-functionally with scientists and engineers alike.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Qualifications

Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.

Relocation benefits are not available for this job posting. 

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of California is $25.00-$40.00 hour.  Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. This position also qualifies for paid holiday time off benefits.
