Department Summary
Pathology Lab Research and Early Development (PL-RED) specializes in cancer diagnostics research and early development of new technologies for the pathology field. We are responsible for feeding the product development pipeline for the clinical pathology laboratory customer area and for new tissue diagnostics in medicine. PL-RED is a cross-disciplinary department that relies on contributions from a variety of fields including biology, chemistry, physics, robotics and computer science and artificial intelligence.
This internship position is located in Tucson, on-site.
The Opportunity
As a member of the Pathology Assay Team, you will use your general knowledge of biology, molecular biology and/or chemistry to help to develop new reagent formulations and procedures that will enable our tissue diagnostics with improved capabilities, and enable greater environmental sustainability. This is a ‘hands on’ laboratory bench work position embedded with a team of experienced scientists who will help you to be part of the team and help to advise your project. The role involves integrating into an Agile team environment where you will be mentored in pathology assay technology R&D while completing a defined project. You will also be introduced to our Agile approach to scientific teamwork. You will contribute directly to our real-world effort to provide diagnostic certainty for life-changing decisions that our patients face.
Program Highlights
Intensive 12-weeks, full-time (40 hours per week) paid internship.
Program start dates are in May/June (Summer).
A stipend, based on location, will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship.

Who You Are (Required)
Required Education: You meet one of the following criteria:
Must be pursuing a PhD (enrolled student).
Required Majors: Biology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology or Chemistry.
Required experience and qualifications
Two years or more general biology or chemistry laboratory experience required.
Required Skills
Strong understanding of scientific principles, concepts and common laboratory skills related to life sciences and/or life-science related chemistry.
Working knowledge and basic experience with immunohistochemistry.
Experience presenting scientific data and maintaining detailed laboratory notes.
Ability to use common laboratory equipment such as pipettes, pH meters, and precision weight scales.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Qualifications
Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.

Experience with histology/tissue pathology concepts and histochemical stains for tissue preferred (H&E, special stains).
Experience with automated histological staining instruments.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of Arizona is $43.00 hour. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. This position also qualifies for paid holiday time off benefits.
