2025 Summer Intern - Visualization Specialist
Department Summary
The mission of the Data Intelligence (DI) team in the Early Clinical Development (ECD) department at Genentech is to optimize the support of clinical systems to provide high-quality clinical trial data insights and to offer data science-related consultation to the study teams. We leverage cutting-edge data science and operation data management to facilitate the study start-up planning. We develop advanced analytical data visualization and conduct predictive analysis to increase the efficiency of clinical data review and clinical operations with the ultimate goal of driving data-driven decision-making throughout the study lifecycle.
This internship position is located in South San Francisco, on-site.
The Opportunity
The selected candidate will assist in setting up and developing custom user interface and visualization outputs in Spotfire to enhance our data visualization capabilities. This internship offers a valuable opportunity to gain hands-on experience in Business Intelligence (BI) tool customization and data visualization.
Assist in the design, development, and implementation of custom Spotfire Mods, Javascript visualizations (JSVis) and HTML text areas.
Collaborate with the Data Analytics Leaders to understand user requirements and translate them into technical specifications.
Develop interactive and user-friendly visualizations and input forms using JavaScript, D3.js, HTML/CSS, Python and Spotfire’s Data Functions.
Test and debug in Spotfire to ensure optimal performance and functionality.
Document the development process, including technical specifications and user guides.
Program Highlights
Intensive 12-weeks, full-time (40 hours per week) paid internship.
Program start dates are in May/June (Summer).
A stipend, based on location, will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship.
Ownership of challenging and impactful business-critical projects.
Work with some of the most talented people in the biotechnology industry.
Stay updated with the latest trends and best practices in data visualization and BI tools.
Provide support for end-users by troubleshooting and resolving issues related to the visualizations.
Who You Are (Required)
Required Education: You meet one of the following criteria:
Attained a Bachelor's Degree (not currently enrolled in a graduate program).
Pursuing a Master's Degree or a PhD (enrolled student).
Required Majors: Computer Science, Information Technology, Data Science, Business Analytics, or a related field.
Required Skills
Basic to intermediate knowledge of JavaScript and D3.js.
Familiarity with data visualization concepts and BI tools (experience with Spotfire is a plus).
Understanding of web development languages such as HTML and CSS.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Qualifications
Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.

Experience with TIBCO Spotfire or other BI tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI).
Understanding of APIs and data integration techniques.
Understanding of database management and SQL.
Familiarity with Git or other version control systems.
Previous experience in creating interactive dashboards or data visualizations.
Previous projects or coursework involving JavaScript and D3.js will be a strong plus.
Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Relocation benefits are not available for this job posting.
The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of California is $45.00-$50.00 hour. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. This position also qualifies for paid holiday time off benefits.
