Job Description

The intern will join an AI/ML project team, led and supervised by Computational Biologists within the GI² TAU organization, which supports Takeda's clinical trials, while collaborating closely with experienced team members from the Takeda ShinrAI Center.

The intern will be integral to our initiatives in the gastrointestinal (GI) and inflammation disease areas by applying bioinformatics, machine learning, and AI techniques. This position will involve working with both structured and unstructured data, including multi-omics datasets and textual information. The intern will contribute to the research and development of generative AI applications, helping to enhance our understanding of complex biological systems and improve drug development processes. This will include tasks such as evaluating and preprocessing datasets, benchmarking AI models, and exploring innovative applications of AI that align with our clinical program needs.

Under the guidance of experienced mentors, the intern will develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills while collaborating with computational biologists and AI scientists. This collaborative environment will allow the intern to effectively communicate research plans, progress, and results, ensuring a meaningful contribution to the team's success within the GI2 TAU. Additionally, the opportunity to present their work will further enhance their professional experience and visibility within the field.
 

How You Will Contribute:

Apply relevant computational biology, Bioinformatics, Data Science, and AI/ML methods tailored to the specific problems at hand

Assist in identifying, evaluating, and curating public multi-omics datasets relevant to diseases and therapeutic areas of interest. Work with structured and unstructured data

Contribute to enhancing large-scale omics data integration and visualization

Support efforts to leverage innovative foundational tools including large language models (LLMs) and knowledge graph to improve computational methodologies and generate accurate insights from biological datasets. Additionally, benchmark AI, ML, and Generative AI tools to assess and optimize performance

Collaborate with computational biologists, AI scientists and cross-functional partners, effectively communicating research plans, progress, and results

Internship Development Opportunities:

The internship offers significant development opportunities in applying bioinformatics and AI/ML techniques to real-world challenges in gastrointestinal and inflammation diseases. Interns will enhance their skills in handling diverse data types, evaluating AI models, and collaborating with cross-functional teams, all while developing critical thinking and problem-solving abilities. Additionally, they will gain practical experience in innovative applications of knowledge graph and Generative AI, preparing them for future roles in computational biology and data science.
 

Job Requirements:

This is a hybrid position located in Cambridge, MA

Available to work full-time (40 hours per week), within the core business hours of 8:00am –

5:00pm, for 10-12 weeks during the summer months

A current graduate student who has completed at least two years in a Ph.D. program, working toward a degree in Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field. Graduating December 2025 or later

Skilled in applying computational methods and bioinformatics tools to large-scale datasets.

Proficient in Python. Working knowledge of R is a plus but not required

Eager to explore advanced AI/ML methodologies for data integration and visualization

Strong quantitative, analytical, problem solving and conceptual skills

Basic knowledge of Immune & Inflammation diseases, multi-omics data and drug

modulation

Experience with Generative AI, LLMs, knowledge graph and semantic knowledge retrieval

Research mindset to generate hypothesis, plan execution, and carry through

Strong organizational and effective communication skills

Internship Eligibility

Must be authorized to work in the U.S. on a permanent basis without requiring sponsorship

Must be currently enrolled in a degree program graduating December 2025 or later

The internship program is 10-12 weeks depending on the two start dates (June 2nd- August 29th) or (June 16th - August 22nd

The intern must be able to commit to one of these time frames

Able to work full time 40 hours a week during internship dates

Takeda does not provide a housing stipend or relocation support for the U.S Summer Internship Program

U.S. Hourly Wage Range:

$21.00 - $46.00

The estimated hourly range reflects an anticipated range for this position. The actual hourly wage offered will depend on the candidate’s school year/level to be entered following completion of internship.  The actual hourly wage offered will be in accordance with state or local minimum wage requirements for the job location.
