Join the 4-H team of Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) Ulster County and make a difference! 4-H is looking for someone with experience in youth development or education with strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills. The 4-H Educator will be working alongside another full-time educator and the program leader to deliver and implement 4-H programs focusing on Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math, Public Speaking, Workforce Prep, and Healthy Lifestyles. You'll bring the land grant system's knowledge to Ulster County youth through in-school, afterschool, summer school, library, and grant-funded programs. Responsibilities include but not limited to:
• Program Delivery: Implement high-quality educational programs and events.
• Volunteer Management: Recruit, train, and support volunteers.
• Event Management: Organize and participate in special programs and events.
• Chaperoning: Supervise youth on trips and events.
• Community Engagement: Foster program acceptance and address community needs.
This is a full time position - 40 hours per week - with flexibility in schedule depending on events and program needs. There are usually 4-6 evenings and 2-3 weekend days per month to fit into a 40 hour work week.
Required Qualifications:
+ Master’s Degree with experience relevant to the role of the position. Bachelor’s Degree plus 4 years transferrable relevant evidence-based practice or research experience may substitute.
+ Experience in formal or informal teaching settings: classroom, camp, alternative education, etc.
+ Strong interpersonal skills with proven ability to work effectively with Volunteers, advisory boards and committees, community, and funding partners.
+ Positive, problem-solving attitude
+ Ability to educate, motivate, develop and relate to youth ages 5-19
+ Ability to recruit, educate, motivate and retain Volunteers
+ Demonstrated ability to communicate with adults and youth of diverse backgrounds
+ Highly flexible in delivery of educational content
+ Ability to meet travel requirements associated with this position.
+ Ability to meet acceptable background check and motor vehicle license check standards.
+ Ability to work flexible hours which includes evenings and/or weekends
+ Proficiency with windows-based software including use of the internet and Microsoft Office Suite including Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Publisher, and Excel.
Preferred Qualifications:
+ Coursework in Education, Agriculture and/or Human/Youth Development.
+ Experience with Cooperative Extension, 4-H and/or other similar educational organizations.
+ Experience in guiding and collaborating with volunteers.
+ Ability to identify and develop volunteer leadership.
+ Ability to identify, develop, and maintain community connections in schools and other educational spaces.
+ Ability to initiate, plan, organize, implement, teach, and evaluate informal educational programs.
+ Ability to effectively participate in professional team efforts.
+ Ability and willingness to work with diverse audiences and maintain cultural sensitivity.
+ Ability to communicate effectively through verbal, written and visual channels using traditional methods and educational tools, as well as electronic technology (e.g., video, audio, computers, etc.).
+ Ability to identify and utilize program resources from the organization and the community.
+ Ability to relate effectively to co-workers, advisors, community and professional leaders.
+ Ability to plan and organize personal work responsibilities according to priorities developed with the immediate supervisor.
+ Fluent in Spanish.
Responsibilities/Essential Functions:
Program Responsibilities:
Program Development - 10%
+ May assist in creation of innovative educational programming.
+ Assist Supervisor with development of 4-H Youth Development educational programs to meet identified needs and diverse interests of participants and volunteers.
+ Assist Supervisor with development of educational programming initiatives.
+ Assist Supervisor in research, identification, and selection of existing resources.
+ Assist with identifying activities and resources necessary to implement initiatives and projects.
+ Create program materials to address identified needs.
+ Assist Supervisor in making programmatic changes based on program evaluation outcomes and to meet changing local priorities.
+ Assist Supervisor in structuring programs to meet the needs of diverse program participants.
Program Delivery - 55%
+ Deliver high quality 4-H Youth Development educational programs and events that address local, regional and statewide 4-H Youth Development programming priorities with emphasis on aforementioned programming initiatives. Events and programs often involve volunteers.
+ Deliver programs and participate in special projects including but not limited to the 4-H Leader trainings, County Fair, State Fair, 4-H Fundraising, Public Presentations, Awards and Recognition, Workshops, Teen Programs, Field Trips and other extension Association activities, as assigned.
+ Deliver 4-H Youth Development programming for a variety of delivery methods including After School, In School, Summer School, Day Camps, and 4-H Club Programs.
+ Utilize a variety of educational methods which may include direct teaching, group experiences, media, newsletters, electronic technology, internet, and distance learning to deliver program.
+ Effectively train Volunteers such as Club Leaders, Evaluators, and Mentors in the principles of positive youth development and program requirements.
+ Serve as a chaperone on youth trips including but not limited to Capital Days, Cornell Career Explorations, and NYS Fair
+ Serve as subject matter resource to Volunteers and Youth.
+ Foster acceptance of program, methods, and policies to address community and individual needs and consider diverse audiences.
+ Provide educational program efforts via mass media including contributing articles to 4-H newsletter, utilizing emails, phone messages, and website postings.
+ Interact with program participants representing CCE in a professional manner at all times.
+ Represent CCE before the public, community leaders, government officials, Cornell or other land grant universities in a professional manner as part of program delivery.
Program Evaluation - 5%
+ Assist in the creation of program evaluation framework.
+ Interact with program participants, Association staff, program committees, county/community leaders, and other key stakeholders to collect evaluation data for improving programs.
+ Assist in analyzing collected program evaluation data for reporting and program improvement purposes using standard, established policy, procedure and methods.
+ Assist with recommending program changes to strengthen and improve programs.
+ Communicate evaluation results and findings to stakeholders.
Administrative Responsibilities:
Administrative Direction - 10%
+ Assist with establishing Association program goals and priorities to align with Association and statewide Plan of Work.
+ Assist with development of marketing strategies, public affairs and special events to reach target audiences and meet program objectives.
+ Assist in identifying community and fiscal resources for program continuance and enhancement.
+ Provide supervisor with program related information to assist the budget development process.
Administrative Management - 5%
+ Assist in monitoring program to ensure that educational content conforms to policies and objectives of the Association and is research based.
+ Assist with monitoring program financial status to ensure compliance with funding requirements, program budget, grant specifications, and adherence to Association strategies/Plan of work.
+ Assist with identifying ways to reduce costs and maximize existing resources within the Association.
+ Make recommendations to Supervisor regarding program budgetary needs.
+ Assist in solving problems and resolving conflicts that arise within the 4-H Youth Development program utilizing appropriate policies and procedures.
+ Assist with ensuring volunteer direction and management procedures are followed according to established policies and procedures by providing guidance, leadership and resources for volunteers and volunteer leaders including recruitment, screening, orientation, training, evaluation, and management.
Administrative Coordination/Operation - 10%
+ Maintain and prepare teaching materials necessary for 4-H Youth Development programs applying existing subject matter knowledge.
+ Maintain communication with constituents and the community through variety of methods such as e-newsletters, e-mails, social media, website postings and content.
+ Assist with coordination of marketing and promotion of 4-H Youth Development through public relation initiatives and networking/collaborating with government, economic, educational, and other organizations.
+ Coordinate identified administrative aspects of the program including, but not limited to 4-H Youth Development website content upload and maintenance, design, and distribution of 4-H e-newsletter, maintaining files, etc.
+ Act as contact for Volunteers and Volunteer Leaders within the County.
+ Provide information as requested to assist with preparation of reports, impact statements, and success stories on program progress and accomplishments for funders, advisory committees, Board and others as necessary.
Professional Improvement and Other Duties as Assigned - 5%
+ In cooperation with the Supervisor, jointly develop and pursue a professional development plan to increase competencies relative to position accountabilities and to address changes in programming and association priorities.
+ Participate in all required orientation, training, and/or in-service meetings and trainings as scheduled/required.
+ Pursue personal growth through expanding personal knowledge of the total organization and through updating techniques and technical skills relating to the position.
+ Carry out assignments and other duties as assigned by supervisor, including but not limited to local health fairs, community activities, etc. Collaborate in activities that are in general support of Cornell Cooperative Extension including but not limited to attendance at staff meetings, timely reporting of expenses, working with other staff, general marketing of Cooperative Extension programs and other duties as assigned.
