Purpose of Position:
The purpose of this position is to direct, setup, operate and control electric arc furnaces and auxiliary equipment used in the manufacture of ceramic fiber; to insure desired product quality and quantity; to maintain productivity standards and to insure safe operation.
The performance criteria for this position includes the successful achievement of plant, team and individual goals, relating to efficiency, productivity, safety, attendance and quality.
Nature and Scope:
This position reports directly to the Shift Advisor, but is also directed by the "A OIC." This position maintains a constant liaison with the Shift Advisor, the "A OIC" other "A" Operators, "B" Operators, Quality Assurance, Production Control and Shipping in matters of production, reporting, quality and safety. This position also coordinates the efforts of some "B" Operators.
Major Job Functions and Tasks:
*Furnace Operator (Averages 80% of workday):
Directs, sets-up, operates and controls the SEF furnaces and auxiliary equipment in the manufacture of ceramic fiber. Has working knowledge of, and effectively performs, all startup, shutdown and emergency shutdown procedures of all furnaces. Makes all necessary adjustments on the equipment to ensure product quality and desired quantity. Tests finished product and enters results into tracking system. Reads and interprets various gauges and controls with respect to AC and DC power; steam; air (primary, secondary, incoming); and various water cooling devices for pyramid flow, orifice flow, forehearth, pot, electrodes and other devices. Operates automated raw materials handling and mixing system. Prepares production and downtime reports. Troubleshoots furnace operation for maintenance problems. Assists in replacement of spent furnace components. Maintains safe procedures of operation and observes existing fire and safety rules.*Needler Operator (Averages 20% of workday when occurs):
Monitor needling machine to ensure the fiber blanket is running smoothly through the operation. Adjust as needed. Prepare needle boards. Assists in unloading of raw material rail cars. Works successfully in team environment. Directs, trains and instructs other plant personnel, as required. Maintains clean, safe, orderly work area. Product monitoring. Use the Adaptive Coaching process for communication, goal alignment, problem solving, and career planning.
