**POSITION DETAILS**
The CUNY School of Medicine (CUNY SoM) located in the heart of Harlem, New York, is the only medical school in the City University of New York system and the only public medical school in Manhattan. Building upon 50 years of success as the Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education, the institution transitioned to the CUNY School of Medicine (SoM) in 2016. The CUNY SoM offers an accelerated BS/MD degree (7-year program) and a Physician Assistant Master’s Degree (27 months program). True to its legacy of access, opportunity, and community transformation, the medical school’s mission remains to recruit highly talented students as diverse as New York City itself. CUNY SoM places a special emphasis on the recruitment of those who are underrepresented in the field of medicine and on training high quality, culturally competent health professionals and scientists equipped to address the healthcare needs of New York’s medically under-served communities. As a major priority, CUNY SoM also seeks to enhance the recruitment and retention of senior leadership, faculty, and staff to more closely reflect the diversity of our student body.
Under the direction of the Associate Dean of Student Affairs in the Student Affairs department, the Academic Advisor will assist with the planning, implementation, and supportive resources that impact the engagement, retention, and degree completion of assigned students. The advisor will assist students in course selection, monitor their academic progress, and offer mentorship on university policies, procedures, and personal development opportunities.
In addition to the CUNY Title Overview, the Academic Advisor duties include but are limited to the following responsibilities:
+ Provides academic advising assistance to a diverse student population and assists continuing students with understanding their Degree Plan or Audit in preparation for their advising session.
+ Provide students with effective and timely referrals to internal and external support services.
+ Provide answers and clarity to student questions prior to meeting with an advisor for continuing and new students.
+ Provide assistance to individual or small groups of students and assist with the development of online advertisement.
+ Participate in training and development sessions to maintain knowledge of academic policies, programs and support services at the college.
+ Collaborate with various Student Affairs staff members to determine students' needs.
+ Participate in departmental events and pop-up tabling, alongside Senior Academic Advisors.
+ May serve as a member of an Advising Team which is a group of faculty and staff, who facilitate advising activities in certain majors.
+ Evening and occastional weekends required.
+ Perform other duties as assigned by the Associate Dean of Student Affairs or designee.
**QUALIFICATIONS**
Bachelor's Degree required.
**PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:**
+ Master's degree in higher education administration, counseling, or closely related field with three years of experience.
+ The ability to work under pressure with a high tolerance for interruptions, and the ability to work with a diverse student body;
+ Ideal candidate will have excellent written, verbal communication and presentation skills as well as strong multi-tasking skills;
+ Excellent interpersonal skills and strong customer service orientation;
+ Ability to work non-traditional hours, including occasional evening and/or weekend shifts for office coverage or College events;
+ Experience using PeopleSoft, Campus Management Connect or other standard higher education industry student records, admissions and/or recruiting systems;
+ Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint).
**CUNY TITLE OVERVIEW**
Provides academic counseling and planning services to a diverse student population.
- Assists students with clarifying values and goals; counsels students regarding educational options, requirements, policies and procedures.
- Offers academic and personal support to guide students through the course selection process
- Provides students with effective and timely referral to other college and external support services
- Monitors and evaluates students' educational progress by conducting academic progress audits
- Establishes and maintains student files, databases and records; prepares activity reports and analyses
- May specialize in providing advice on specific programs or to specific student groups
- Performs related duties as assigned.

**COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS**
Salary Range: $44,411 - $86,188
Salary commensurate with education and experience.
