The Kinesiology and Health Science Department (KHS) at Utah State University seeks a dedicated Academic Advisor to provide comprehensive support to prospective, current, and former undergraduate students with a student-centered approach. This 12-month, full-time position, located on the USU Main Campus in Logan, Utah, will primarily focus on guiding students in developing academic plans and class schedules, assessing their academic progress, supporting career planning, and addressing academic inquiries.

 

Beyond individual advising, which constitutes approximately 85% of the role, the advisor will build a positive culture through participation in recruitment events and student engagement activities, fostering a sense of community and active participation in professional development opportunities, department and staff meetings, and contribution to the university-wide advising system. This position may also include miscellaneous departmental responsibilities, which may include assisting with data collection and analytics, program development & assessment, or special projects.

Responsibilities

Core Advising and Student Support:

Direct Student Advising: Provide comprehensive academic advising services through walk-ins and appointments via various modalities (in-person, phone, email, Zoom).Assist students in developing academic plans and class schedules.Monitor students’ progress toward degree completion using DegreeGuide students to understanding and navigating university policies and procedures.Assist students with academic problem resolution and program changes.Prepare students’ graduation applications for approvalStudent Development and Guidance: Assist students in making informed decisions about their academic progress.Encourage and guide students in defining and developing realistic academic goals.Facilitate career exploration and planning and assist students in aligning their educational goals with their career aspirations.Facilitate students' understanding of the purpose of higher education and its impact on life goals.Promote the benefits of building a strong learning community, network, and support system.Provide information and strategies for utilizing available campus resources and services.Make appropriate referrals to university and non-university resources.

Administrative and Departmental Responsibilities:

Record Keeping and Compliance: Maintain accurate records and documentation of all advising interactions.Ensure confidentiality and adherence to institutional policies and procedures, including FERPA law regarding student records.Departmental and College Engagement: Serve as the undergraduate contact for the Kinesiology and Health Science Student Association (KHSSA), including attending KHSSA meetings and/or activities as needed.Assist with campus-wide, college, and department recruitment and events.Participate in campus-wide, college, department, and team meetings.General Duties: Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.Actively seek and participate in opportunities for professional development Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

Background in kinesiology, health, or recreation, demonstrating foundational knowledge in the department's undergraduate areas.Master's degreeOne or more years of professional experience in academic advising, counseling, teaching, or related student services areas.Broad knowledge of USU’s academic programs, general education requirements, graduation requirements, and student services.Experience with academic software platforms, including Ellucian Degree Works, Ellucian Banner, and appointment manager programs.Experience with data analytics.Experience with university recruitment and/or career advising
