Scope of Job
The UTRGV School of Medicine seeks a child/ adolescent psychiatrist to join outgrowing faculty for the undergraduate and graduate medical education program, including residencies in General and Child & Adolescent Psychiatry located in Harlingen, TX. Responsibilities include direct patient care, program development, resident supervision, medical student teaching, and scholarly activities. Faculty will participate in creating and implementing the educational and clinical training sites of the developing Medical School. The UTRGV SOM
has a residency program in psychiatry and will be adding child/adolescent psychiatry fellowship. These programs are conceptualized as being natural extensions of the medical school experience with the goals of providing both general and specialized didactic and clinical experiences to produce well rounded, skilled psychiatrists and child/ adolescent psychiatrists who can work with a range of problems and types of populations in diverse settings. The mission of these programs is to graduate skilled, compassionate, versatile physicians who are knowledgeable about systems of care, diverse ethnic and cultural populations, and collaborative care in addition to being knowledgeable and competent in the general clinical practice of psychiatry and child/ adolescent psychiatry. The residency training programs will emphasize inpatient and, psychotherapy, integrated experiences with primary care, multidisciplinary teaching, multiple community sites and a cohesive, integrated approach to learning, understanding and utilizing the science of medicine for effective psychiatric practice. Experiential activities will be supported by an interconnected didactic and clinical curriculum that emphasizes self-initiated learning, problem solving skills, and appropriate use of technology. Faculty will be actively involved in teaching residents in a variety of forums with the expectation that faculty and trainees will work closely together. Faculty and residents will also work with medical students and trainees from other specialties.
Faculty joining these residency programs will have the opportunity to develop and start educational, clinical and research programs within a system that prioritizes working within the community, incorporating prevention and early intervention into care, and collaboration within and outside of medicine. While the primary focus of these positions will be the development of clinical and educational programs, teaching and supervising trainees and the provision of direct clinical care, applicants with current or prior research experience and interest are also encouraged to apply. Protected time for scholarly activities and/or start-up research support can be provided based on interest, prior experience and future career goals.
Minimum Qualifications
Successful completion of an ACGME accredited Psychiatry residency and Child/Adolescent Psychiatry fellowship. Doctoral degree (MD or DO) from an ACGME accredited institution and can be licensed in the State of Texas. Must also possess or be able to obtain appropriate medical staff appointment.
Discipline Specific Required Qualifications
Successful completion of an ACGME accredited Psychiatry residency and Child/Adolescent Psychiatry fellowship. Doctoral degree (MD or DO) from an ACGME accredited institution and can be licensed in the State of Texas. Must also possess or be able to obtain appropriate medical staff appointment. Consideration may given to candidate seeking less than a 1.0 FTE .

Preferred Qualifications
Experience teaching residents, medical students and allied health professionals in clinical and classroom settings. Experience working in undergraduate and graduate medical education programs. Current ABPN Certification in Psychiatry and Child/ Adolescent Psychiatry.

UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may
require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is
performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive
and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code
ยง51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of
Texas ( TRS ), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least
135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement
Program ( ORP ) instead of TRS , subject to the position being 40 hours per week
and at least 135 days in length.
