Academic Counselor - LIEOC (2 Positions)
Location: Farmingdale, NY Category: Professional Posted On: Thu Aug 22 2024 Job Description: The Long Island Educational Opportunity Center at Farmingdale State College is looking for an Academic Counselor. Under general supervision of the Student Services Assistant Director, the incumbents will be responsible for, but not limited to, the following: + Works with students individually and/or in groups to provide guidance and counseling related to achieving educational goals and career plans and provides appropriate academic or psycho-social referrals as needed. + Conducts interviews to obtain information about personal, academic, and work histories to determine students' placement in programs and their service needs. + Works with other LIEOC staff to assist in developing and monitoring student progress toward increasing effective retention and completion plans. + Monitors and evaluates students' progress in class and in groups to evaluate areas of concern and takes appropriate action to address any concerns. + Documents counseling, case management, disciplinary educational and career planning and other student interventions in student files, as appropriate. + Advises prospective, newly admitted, returning, and former students about academic and career goals. + Refers students to available support services. + Educates students about supplemental programs and opportunities. + Coordinates, develops, and facilitates outreach activities to help students gain knowledge about university resources, policies, and procedures. + Develops, plans, and participates in new student orientation and recruitment events. + Serves on committees as assigned. + Maintains thorough knowledge of completion requirements for current programs. + Develops, maintains, and records all academic advising and student support services that are academic on a student database. + Effectively communicates with faculty, staff, students, and other departments to enhance the advisement process. + Serves as liaison to Academic Partnership's enrollment and retention services. + Acts as the primary point of contact for student issues initiated by Academic Partnerships. + Streamlines application procedures and communications to minimize time between requirement decision and program start. + Manages pending student files related to mandatory requirements (i.e. clinical health requirements, financial requirements, etc.). + Accepts mandatory split work shifts (both days and evenings) to accommodate course/class sessions and student availability. Job Requirements: MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: + Bachelor's degree in Counseling, Psychology, or a related field. + Two years of professional experience, preferably working with non-traditional adult learners. + Must be flexible and comfortable working in a fast paced and high stress environment. + Computer savvy, familiarity with the uses of student databases systems such as Banner. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: + Master's degree in Guidance Counseling, Psychology, Sociology, or closely related field. + Bilingual. Additional Information: This is a full-time UUP position. + For the first 10 working days, beginning Thursday, August 22, 2024, and ending Thursday, September 5, 2024, applications will be limited to UUP Farmingdale. + CLOSING DATE FOR RECEIPT OF APPLICATIONS: Open Until Filled + SALARY: $55,151 + $3,400 in downstate location pay = $58,551 Total Compensation.
