The term Graduate Assistant is the umbrella term that encompasses all types of GA appointments. Graduate Assistants are employed by the University to teach, conduct research, or assist with administrative duties in departments and non-academic units. Every attempt is made to assign Graduate Assistants to positions that are directly related to the student’s field of study or that provide the opportunity to develop transferable, professional skills. Graduate Assistantships are assigned in the department or unit and confirmed by the Graduate School.

This position is also intended to provide an invaluable educational experience for graduate assistants. Graduate assistants in this position strengthen their communication, coaching, and facilitation skills, develop an in-depth understanding of learning strategies and coaching methodologies, and learn how to measure student growth over time. Graduate assistants in this position work as part of a close-knit team to provide flexible support for students.

Position:The AAC includes professional staff, graduate assistants, and undergraduate students who work collaboratively to accomplish division and office goals. In this position, the Graduate Assistant will be supervised by Erin Cassidy, Coordinator of Academic Excellence.

Coaches will act as case managers addressing a variety of issues related to academic skill development, helping students recognize challenges and resolve them independently. Coaches will also connect students to other campus partners and services necessary for their goal attainment.Coaches will receive extensive training that meets the guidelines set forth by the International Coaching Federation (ICF) – the world’s leader in setting and maintaining coaching certification standards. This position provides a rich professional experience that guides graduate assistants along the path to coaching certification if the graduate assistant chooses to independently pursue that opportunity.

Graduate Assistant Responsibilities:
● Serve a caseload of approximately 50 first year students as well as students referred by campus partners● Respond effectively and efficiently to student early alerts (Starfish)● Address challenges to student’s academic skill development● Help students recognize challenges, and assist in the development of skills to resolve them independently● Connect students to other university supports and services● Manage timely and accurate records through Starfish● Attend weekly in-service trainings and team meetings● Communicate effectively and practice essential coaching skills● Develop ICF core competencies● Perform other duties as required

Time Commitment:20 hours/week during office hours (Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-6 p.m.) for the 2024-2025 academic year (August 1st – May 9th). Specific hours will be determined in cooperation with the position’s supervisor based on office needs. Some evening and weekend work may be required.

Compensation:Students are compensated $15,000 for the academic year; the Academic Achievement Center does not provide tuition waivers.

Skills and Qualifications:● Strong academic performance.● Ability to interact with faculty, staff, undergraduate, and graduate students in a professional and personable manner.● Excellent oral and written communication skills.● Comfortable speaking and presenting to individuals, small-groups, and large groups.● Basic understanding of computers and Microsoft products is necessary, additional training will be provided.● Ability to work independently and flexibly in a fast-paced and ever-changing higher education environment.● Strong decision-making skills and comfort with translating knowledge and experience to new situations is strongly desired. Support from the supervisor is always available.● Previous coaching, mentoring, or teaching experience preferred. Minimum Qualifications To be eligible for appointments as a graduate assistant, you must:
• Maintain academic good standing at all times (3.0).
• Be enrolled full-time, which is generally a minimum of 9 credits.
• Make satisfactory progress toward your degree as defined by your academic program and the Graduate School.
