The Department of Biology at Colorado State University ( CSU ) is one of eight departments in the College of Natural Sciences. Position Summary
The Department of Biology’s Academic Support Center promotes student retention and success through a variety of advising and program activities designed to assist students in making critical transitions, developing academic plans, connecting with academic units and campus resources, and engaging with learning communities. The Academic Support Center emphasizes and enhances students’ abilities and assets and supports the campus priority for a diverse and supportive learning environment.
The Department of Biology is seeking an Academic Success Coordinator who will play a significant role in strengthening departmental efforts to provide quality advising and promote undergraduate student success. The coordinator will be a full time, regular, administrative professional position. This position will support an innovative and holistic approach to providing students with the assistance, guidance, and resources necessary to be successful. The primary functions of the Academic Success Coordinator will be to support students as they transition to the university environment, to promote appropriate choice of majors, to help struggling students strategize for academic improvement, and encourage timely graduation.
The Academic Success Coordinator will work directly with students majoring in Biological Sciences and Zoology to foster their academic success by developing, implementing, and monitoring an action plan for graduation. The Academic Success Coordinator will work closely with the Assistant Chair for Undergraduate Programs, Undergraduate Program Coordinator, Undergraduate Committee, and other advising staff, and will report to the Lead Academic Success Coordinator.
Required Job Qualifications
+ Master’s degree in Higher Education, Counseling or Human Services, Psychology, Education, Liberal Arts/Social Sciences or Natural Sciences with one year of professional experienceOR;
+ Bachelor’s degree in Counseling or Human Services, Psychology, Education, Liberal Arts/Social Sciences or Natural Sciences with three years of professional experience working directly with students in an education setting to provide academic advising, and/or conducting student development activities such as orientation, multicultural affairs, residence life, teaching and career services.

+ Excellent communication skills, including interpersonal communication, presentation, writing and computer skills
+ Demonstrated awareness and understanding of issues facing students from under-represented groups, experience with students from diverse backgrounds and commitment to diversity and inclusion
+ Educational background in science coursework, related to Biology, Botany or Zoology
+ Self-motivated team player with demonstrated ability to prioritize multiple tasks and meet deadlines in a fast paced work environment

+ Advise students on academic requirements, scheduling classes, and university policies related to academics
+ Advise transfer students at Orientations, reviewing transfer evaluations to clarify and recommend any needed course re-evaluations
+ Advise first-year students at summer Orientations, lead Ram Welcome
+ Meet with students for appointments and drop-ins, document notes from appointments, drop-ins, and email communication with students in advising platforms, such as EAB Navigate and Ariesweb
+ Support students on academic probation to improve GPA and overcome academic difficulties
+ Make appropriate referrals to campus resources for academic and/or personal support
+ Guide students in preparing to enter health professions and professional/graduate schools; connecting students to health professions advising
+ Counsel students on career planning including career exploration, decision-making, preparation, internships, and job search; connecting students to Career resources
+ Provide students with easy access to timely and relevant information by posting items on Canvas, Department social media, and contribute to other informational resources
+ Respond to a high volume of student emails in a timely manner, documenting communication
+ Respond to parent/guardian emails, and meet with parents/guardians, in accordance with FERPA regulations
+ Assist in advising the Zoology and Biology clubs – coordination of meetings, activities and field trips
