Accessibility Assurance Specialist, Darden School of Business

The University of Virginia Darden School of Business, one of the world's leading business schools, seeks a Charlottesville, VA-based Accessibility Assurance Specialist. The Specialist supports faculty, staff, and students across our residential and professional degree programs to ensure an accessible learning environment. This position requires initiative, organization, change management, and problem-solving skills. This role reports to the Director of Instructional Design and Assessment and is a hybrid position with a blend of on-grounds and work-from-home days. 

This is a two-year limited term assignment with full benefits.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

Lead school-wide accessibility initiatives to meet WCAG 2.2 AA Guidelines in our digital ecosystem 

Maintain and share up to date knowledge of research-based practices in accessible design and digital accessibility, given the Department of Justice Spring 2024 ruling for public institutions that fall within Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act 

Review and update courses, Canvas templates, and learning technologies to meet WCAG 2.2 AA guidelines, including proactive remediation of course materials and assessments, communicating with tool vendors, and identifying and closing gaps 

Support the development of accessibility skillsets across teams at Darden  

Promote research-based and innovative approaches to maximize flexibility, inclusion, and equitable access to learning, including Universal Design for Learning and other inclusive pedagogical approaches 

In collaboration with the Office of Student Affairs, develop effective processes and guidelines to support faculty in implementing disability-related course accommodations 

Consult with faculty members to enhance the accessibility of course materials, activities and assessments across programs    

Monitor and report on Darden’s accessibility efforts  

Support University efforts to promote accessible teaching and learning   

Collaborate with colleagues across Grounds, including with the University’s Coordinator of Academic Accessibility, the Student Disability and Access Center (SDAC), Learning Design and Technology (LDT), and the Center for Teaching Excellence (CTE) to promote accessible learning experiences 

Professional Experience and Education:

Bachelor's degree and at least two years of relevant experience required. Relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree

Master’s preferred, preferably in disability and accessibility services, instructional design, instructional technology, or a related field 

Accessibility experience, including digital accessibility support; faculty/staff development; teaching, administration, or disability support in an educational setting preferred

IAAP certification (e.g. CPACC, WAS) or other digital accessibility qualification preferred  

Experience working in Higher Education preferred  

Familiarity with ADA compliance laws, WCAG 2.2 guidelines, assistive technologies, digital accessibility, course accommodations, and related standards and best practices in higher education settings 

Commitment to and knowledge of academic accommodations and digital accessibility 

Demonstrated high level of professionalism, customer service, attention to detail, follow-through, teamwork, flexibility and positive attitude 

Comfortable leading professional development workshops for faculty and staff 

Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse educational, cultural and professional backgrounds to establish and maintain strong partnerships and to foster an inclusive environment  

Excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills, including listening with empathy to understand and surface needs and the ability to convey complex ideas and potential solutions to a range of stakeholders  

Proficient with Microsoft applications, Canvas LMS, and instructional technologies 

Experience in Microsoft Excel with VLOOKUP, Text to Columns, calculations, and sorting data
