Chalk Point Generation Station, located in Aquasco, Maryland, is a major power generation facility with a total capacity of approximately 1618 MW. The station comprises nine units, including seven gas turbines, and two steam turbines. This configuration allows the station to effectively meet regional energy demands.

Opportunity Summary

The Accountant plays a crucial role in maintaining the financial health of the organization by preparing and ensuring the accuracy of financial statements while managing the general ledger in compliance with GAAP and regulatory standards. This position involves analyzing costs, assisting in the budgeting process, and conducting financial analyses to support decision-making. Additionally, the Accountant manages cash flow, oversees accounts payable and receivable, and implements internal controls to safeguard financial integrity.

Primary Duties

Accounting and Compliance Management

Maintain the general ledger, record journal entries, ensure accuracy, and manage reconciliations. Process invoices, manage vendor payments, and ensure timely payment of obligations. Manage billing and collections, ensuring timely invoicing and follow-up on outstanding receivables. Assist with internal and external audits by providing documentation and responding to inquiries. Prepare and file tax returns, ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal tax regulations. Implement and monitor internal financial controls to safeguard assets and ensure accuracy in financial reporting.

Financial Reporting and Analysis

Prepare and maintain accurate financial statements and reports, including balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow statements. Track and analyze costs related to power generation operations, such as fuel, labor, and maintenance, to aid in budgeting and financial analysis. Assist in the annual budgeting process and develop financial forecasts, analyzing variances between actual and budgeted figures. Conduct analyses to support management decision-making, including profitability and risk assessments. Ensure compliance with GAAP and regulatory requirements, including environmental and emissions reporting.

Cash and Inventory Management

Monitor cash flow, assist in cash forecasting, and manage daily transactions to ensure liquidity. Track and manage inventory levels of supplies and materials used in operations, ensuring accurate valuation and reporting. Review and analyze power purchase and service contracts for proper accounting treatment. Assist with payroll accounting, including the calculation of wages, deductions, and employee benefits, and ensure timely payment. Identify opportunities for improving accounting practices and systems, leveraging ERP tools.

Working Relationships

The Accountant reports to the Accounting Manager and coordinates with all plant personnel as needed. Interacts with external auditors, regulatory agencies, financial institutions, and vendors for compliance and financial management. Additionally, collaborates with Corporate Accounting and Finance to ensure alignment with overall financial strategies and reporting requirements.

Working Conditions

Power plant environment. Physical requirements may also include the possibility of standing for extended periods of time, as well as stair and ladder climbing. Some work may require protective equipment to be worn (hard hat, safety glasses, hearing protection).  Working conditions may include outside in cold and hot weather for periods of time. There are smoking restrictions in and around the facility. 

Fitness for Duty

All employees will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program. This program includes a post-offer/ pre-employment drug screening and post-employment random drug screening. 

Work Schedule

Regular workdays are from Monday to Friday, within standard dayshift hours. However, the position may necessitate extended working hours and flexible shifts as needed, including weekends and holidays, in response to schedules, workload demands, and plant conditions. Periodic callouts may also be necessary as part of the role.

Compensation

Initial starting compensation will range from $115,000 to $145,000 and will include an annual performance bonus.

Job Qualifications

An associate degree in accounting, finance, or a related field is required, with a bachelor's degree preferred. Relevant certifications in accounting or finance from professional organizations are a plus, and equivalent experience may be considered in lieu of formal education. Demonstrated experience in preparing financial statements and reports, including balance sheets and income statements, in accordance with GAAP. Proven ability to analyze and track costs related to operations, with experience in budgeting and financial analysis. Familiarity with budgeting processes and experience in developing financial forecasts, including variance analysis. Experience in maintaining general ledger accuracy, including journal entry recording and reconciliation. Knowledge of AP and AR processes, including invoice processing, vendor management, and collection practices. Understanding of regulatory compliance requirements, including tax regulations and environmental reporting standards. Experience assisting with internal and external audits, including providing documentation and addressing auditor inquiries. Skills in cash flow monitoring and forecasting, along with experience managing daily cash transactions. Excellent interpersonal skills with experience in building relationships and collaborating with diverse stakeholders, including management, auditors, and regulatory agencies. Must possess a valid and unrestricted driver's license, ensuring it remains in good standing at all times.
