Accounting Manager | MAA Corporate Office

Job Summary

The Accounting Manager is responsible for day-to-day operations, oversight, training and quality assurance of the accounts payable and commercial accounting functions.  Primary responsibilities include managing teams to ensure efficient operational processes and continuous improvement by applying a depth and breadth of accounting and accounts payable expertise, especially within commercial accounting and leasing.

Duties and Responsibilities

Supervises accounting staff, including hiring, training, and performance management.

Actively participates in the accounting close process via journal creation and posting.

Ensures production of accurate financial statements

Ensures successful completion of monthly commercial accounting close and reconciliations.

Provides oversight for common area maintenance (CAM) reconciliations and other commercial-specific processes.

Maintains an understanding of the company’s commercial portfolio, financial results, and status.

Supports the retail and office budget process by producing information for key line items, such as straight line rent.

Interacts with property management to provide accounting support.

Provides support to the Accounts Payable team processing a high volume (e.g., 120,000) of utility bills, including utility vendor interaction and troubleshooting.

Participates in bill processing technology upgrades, including systems testing and change management. 

Performs other related duties as assigned to meet the needs of the business.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field and 4 years of accounting or related experience required, including accounts payable, revenue and expense monitoring, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Supervisory management experience required.

Preferred Qualifications

Commercial (office and retail) accounting experience strongly preferred.

Real estate accounting software experience preferred (e.g., Yardi).

Financial accounting software implementation experience preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of core accounting principles and best practices, including GAAP.

General ledger accounting code knowledge.

Knowledge of commercial (retail and office) accounting terminology and concepts

Knowledge of leasing terminology and concepts.

Supervisory and leadership knowledge and skills to coach, counsel, develop and manage performance of others.

Problem solving and critical thinking skills with which to convert goals into appropriate action steps.

Skill and ability to communicate clearly and concisely verbally and in writing.

Quantitative and qualitative analytical skills and attention to detail.

Organizational and prioritizing skills to meet time-sensitive deadlines.

Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Access, Outlook, and PowerPoint).

This position requires the ability to occasionally lift office products and supplies, up to 20 pounds.

This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
