Description
The City of Fairfield Parks & Recreation Department engages the community in programs, facilities, and services that foster active and healthy lifestyles, support positive social interaction, and enhance our community's quality of life. Activity Specialists play a key role in this mission!
Activity Specialists lead and coordinate activities in an assigned program or service area, including but not limited to: recreation activities, health and fitness programs, prevention programs, classes, special events, marketing functions, and city-wide volunteer programs. Work with the general public, which may include senior citizens, adults, teens, youth, and/or preschool age children.
Please Note: Positions are part-time, year-round, non-benefited, and limited to working no more than 1,000 hours in a fiscal year (July 1-June 30). Candidates must be available to work a varied schedule to meet program needs, including weekdays, weekends, and holidays as needed.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work is performed in an office setting, community center or activity site with frequent interruptions, deadlines, complaints, and peak workload periods. Position may require working nights and weekends.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Work may include prolonged sitting and standing, as well as light to moderate lifting, carrying, reaching, stooping and pulling. Work requires manual dexterity, clear (understandable) speech, visual and hearing acuity. The ability to actively participate in recreational activities (including games), and work outdoors in both heat and cold, are also required.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
The Activity Specialist is responsible for oversight of a program site or area, whereas the higher level Program Specialist coordinates, develops and implements specific content within an assigned program or service area.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED AND RECEIVED:
Receives general supervision from a Recreation Program Coordinator, or supervisor or manager assigned to the service area. May receive instruction and guidance from a Program Specialist. Incumbents of this class do not exercise supervision, but may provide lead direction to other part time staff or volunteers.
Minimum Qualifications
Experience:
A minimum of three (3) years experience working with the demographic served by the program area where the vacancy is being filled are required. Experience in leading and assisting with a variety of activities and programs in the area of specialization is highly desirable.
Education:
A passing score on the No Child Left Behind exam, or 48 college units or a Para-Educator certificate is required.
LICENSE AND/OR CERTIFICATE:
+ Possession of and the ability to maintain a valid California Driver's License at the time of appointment is required.
+ First Aid and CPR certification may be required based on the program area where the vacancy is being filled.
Examples of Duties
Duties may include, but are not limited, to the following:
+ Assist with organizing and scheduling community services and activities including but not limited to: sports, recreation, wellness and academic programs.
+ Responsible for monitoring program and site rules, policies and regulations.
+ Prepare and distribute site event publicity, and distribution of program publicity including flyers and press releases.
+ Answer questions from the public and provide information to individuals and groups regarding program offerings and coordination of services.
+ Maintain program records.
+ Distribute and collect program evaluations.
+ Provide training to volunteers as needed.
+ Order, maintain, and inventory program supplies.
+ Perform related work as assigned.
Knowledge & Abilities
Knowledge of:
+ Procedures and methods used in area of specialization.
+ Program content for the area of specialization.
+ Equipment used in the area of specialization.
+ A wide variety of recreation programs and activities including active and passive games, arts and crafts, dramatic arts, nature and science, and special events.
+ Bookkeeping procedures and methods.
+ Record keeping.
+ Modern office equipment, including computers.
Ability to:
+ Assist in program planning and scheduling of facilities.
+ Prepare and distribute marketing and publicity material.
+ Work within budget guidelines.
+ Maintain a variety of records.
+ Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
+ Work cooperatively with other departments, outside agencies, and the general public.
+ Work cooperatively in a team environment and nurture the development of staff.
+ Work with little supervision.
+ Maintain a flexible work schedule dependent upon program requirements.
+ Possess and maintain a positive "can do" attitude.
