Job Description

The Actuarial Assistant will play a key role in the daily actuarial functions of John Hancock. They will be a member of the Actuarial Development Program (ADP) and complete various work assignments/projects as directed by the manager. Students will need Excel skills and will gain knowledge in various computer programs (including RStudio, GGY Axis, Python). 

Primary responsibilities include: 

Update a variety of departmental spreadsheets/templates, and compile, analyze, and report the results of quarterly, yearly, or ad hoc projects as assigned by the manager

Provide meaningful analysis & interpretation of actuarial results and trends in data

Communicate results to the manager, department, and/or senior leaders via email or more formal presentations, as needed

Provide support to more senior actuarial staff as needed

Rotations 

Rotate positions within the company every 18-24 months  

Roles include core actuarial functions (e.g., Pricing, Valuation, Modeling) as well as non-traditional roles (e.g., Governance, Inforce Management, Capital Management) 

Allow students to learn new skills, see different areas of the company, and become a well-rounded actuary

Requirements: 

Bachelor’s degree in Actuarial Science, Statistics, Mathematics, or related field 

Actively pursuing SOA exams   

Minimum 1 SOA exam passed

Will be required to write two exams per year 

Superior aptitude for computer applications, including MS Excel/VBA, MS Access, Python, RStudio, GGY Axis, etc.  While extensive experience with each of these programs is not a requirement, a strong aptitude & willingness to learn is necessary

Excellent verbal and written communication skills (Effective communication and interpersonal skills to deal with both technical and non-technical audiences; ability to explain concepts and results effectively) 

Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and ability to take ownership of projects and drive to completion

Salary & Benefits

The annual base salary for this role is listed below.

Salary range is expected to be between

$55,370.00 USD - $102,830.00 USD

The actual salary will vary depending on local market conditions, geography and relevant job-related factors such as knowledge, skills, qualifications, experience, and education/training. Employees also have the opportunity to participate in incentive programs and earn incentive compensation tied to business and individual performance.
