Position Summary/Description:
The Department of Surgery at the University of North Carolina is seeking applications for a full-time academic trauma, surgical critical care, and acute care surgeon to join our Division of General and Acute Care Surgery. The Division of General and Acute Care Surgery is among 9 clinical Divisions in the Department of Surgery. The Division currently includes 15 faculty members that provide a broad array of clinical services while caring for injured and critically ill patients as well as emergency general surgery patients. This will be Open Rank, this appointment may also be offered as a fixed term track, tenure/tenure track, or variable appointment between 0.5 and 1.0 FTE . Academic appointments will be commensurate with the candidate’s experience.
Our current Surgical ICU and Intermediate Care floor is a 40-bed unit that houses trauma, emergency general surgery, and elective surgical patients from the Department of Surgery and many surgical subspecialties. Cardiovascular ICU is a 28-bed unit that houses cardiac, thoracic and vascular patients. Surgical attendings may have the opportunity to attend in the Cardiovascular ICU if desired. The Department of Surgery also has a one-year Surgical Critical Care fellowship with up to four fellows each year.
Faculty members within the Division of Acute Care Trauma Surgery must possess a desire to commit to all three missions of the department and school of medicine, including the clinical, education, and research missions. Regarding the education mission, faculty members are expected to regularly participate in the education of medical students, residents, and fellows in our Surgical Critical Care fellowship. Additionally, the Acute Care faculty participates in outreach to our many rural referring hospitals and to EMS providers from rural North Carolina counties. Regarding the research mission, a commitment to any one of a broad array of research interests is desirable, including but not limited to clinical, outcomes, health services, basic science, translational, ethics, education, or global surgery research. Regarding the clinical mission, faculty members must be committed to delivering high quality clinical care that is of value to the patients of UNC . The selected candidate will be team-oriented and have the ability to interact well with colleagues inside and out of the Division. Our faculty interact regularly with the hospitalist service, outpatient primary care physicians, surgeons and emergency medicine physicians from both UNC Healthcare and non- UNC referring hospitals.
