Summary
The Senior Environmental Health Specialist is responsible for administering environmental and health programs in food and water protection, air quality, noise, industrial and land pollution, sewage disposal, hazardous and toxic substances, solid waste management, emergency management and institutional health. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency/institution policy.
Functions
Interprets environmental health program requirements, health laws, guidelines, policies, and procedures. Provides technical assistance to the food industry through inspection procedures and service delivery recommendations. Develops food and environmental inspection training materials and conducts training sessions for environmental health specialists. Evaluates inspection skills of field environmental health specialists to ensure conformance to standardized procedures. Conducts assessments of environmental health complaints, such as illness outbreaks and animal bites Inspects food service establishments, individual sewage disposal systems, swimming pools, and spas for food and environmental health law compliance. Provides technical assistance in the mobilization of resources involving food and environmental sanitation during disasters and emergencies, such as fires and hazardous spills. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of state and federal health and safety laws and sanitation regulations. Knowledge of health/safety inspection procedures and techniques. Ability to develop and conduct safety/health training sessions. Ability to communicate technical information and interpret program requirements, rules, regulations, and laws. Ability to analyze sanitation programs and inspection procedures and recommend modifications Ability to formulate policies and procedures and recommend and coordinate programs.
Minimum Qualifications
The formal education equivalent of a bachelor's degree in biology, environmental health, or a related field; plus three years of experience in providing environmental health services or a related field. Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Office of Personnel Management. OTHER JOB RELATED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR ALL OR PART OF THESE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, EXCEPT FOR CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS, UPON APPROVAL OF THE QUALIFICATIONS REVIEW COMMITTEE.
