Job Overview: This position is responsible for the technical and administrative functions within the Anatomic and Clinical Laboratory. The Director oversees the day to day operations and acts as a liaison to the Pathologists and VP, Medical Affairs. Ensures establishment and quality monitoring of an appropriate laboratory standards for service. Develops, monitors and takes corrective action with regard to Quality Control/Performance Improvement, productivity and budgetary matters.

Qualifications:
Required:

Bachelor degree in clinical laboratory science or equivalent based on CLIA and CAPMeets NJ Sanitary Code Chapter 44, Chapter IV, 8:44-2.4 General Laboratory Supervisor5 years progressive work experience in Clinical Laboratory required.

Preferred:

ASCP or AMT certificationGraduate MBA or MPA degree preferred.

Essential Functions:

Business Acumen / Operational Effectiveness

Monitors daily QC and instrument maintenance schedules to ensure protocols are being followed. Provides support to assist in troubleshooting problems. Investigates and resolves all technical problems which occur within the departments. Maintains adequate inventory of supplies and reagents necessary to meet optimal patient testing needs. Guarantees the minimum turnaround time is met to achieve results in accordance with hospital policies. Accountable for maintaining operating expenses within budgeted guidelines. Consistently maintains current SOP manuals and updates as necessary as mandated by numerous regulatory agencies. Monitors the use of overtime. Ensures schedule is designed within the financial framework of the budget. Minimizes the use of overtime.

Communication

Answers inquiries regarding test results, methodology, test specificity and sensitivity and specific factors that can influence test results for patients. Manages LIS computer files revisions, ensures coordination with HIS avoiding system errors. Reviews audit trail for interface errors/billing accuracy. Communicates issues to relevant parties/vendors. Communicates/coordinates files/CDM table changes to ensure consistency. Performs QA of LIS to ensure accuracy of data. Confers with VP of Medical Affairs regarding day to day operations, as needed.

Leadership

Responsible for the technical oversight for the Laboratory Department (Quality Control, Proficiency Testing, etc. )Responsible for the administrative functions within the Laboratory Department. Ensures compliance with all regulatory agencies including JCAHO, NJ State and College of American Pathologists. Maintains the appropriate licenses to operate a full service laboratory and Draw Site. Maintains accurate workload statistics for the Department to ensure true reflection of volume fluctuations. Able to determine volume per dept/shift to ensure operating efficiency. Maintains benchmarking data to ensure efficiency. Assist in planning and development for the departments by evaluating new equipment and procedures. Supports the Patient Satisfaction initiatives for the Medical Center. Designs and implements programs / activities that positively impact customer satisfaction (physicians, employees and patients).

People Management

Ensures adequate resources are assigned/reassigned to sections to meet demands of volume and patient care needs on daily basis. Effectively utilizes staff to maximize productivity; ensures staff is proficient in all phases of medical laboratory. Ensures staff produces accurate patient results, recognizes deviation and able to evaluate findings and solve problems relating to equipment, specimen handling or interfering substances. Responsible to ensure policy and procedures are implemented and that staff is consistently compliant with their content. Contributes to SOP development/revisions; monitor/evaluates staff competency; performs process control monitoring. Manages the performance of the Laboratory Supervisors. Holds them accountable for department activities. Oversees recruitment, staff selection and human resource functions. Ensures timely personnel requests and the accuracy of position control.
