Description
Join the City of Detroit’s Forestry Tree Planting Unit to make a significant impact on Detroit’s tree canopy. In this dynamic leadership position, you will support the City’s growing planting program, working with a small team of passionate individuals dedicated to urban tree planting and care.
This is a Temporary Administrative Special Services (TASS) position.
This appointment term is based on the availability of the grant funds.
The Detroit Resilient Tree Canopy (DRTCI) Initiative is 5-year interdepartmental project focused on implementing strategies to increase tree canopy in neighborhoods with less than 20% coverage; improve forest conditions within the City’s park system; expand workforce pathways for youth in the urban forestry field; and to advance utilization of tree and forest inventories, monitoring, and assessment tools to inform long-term municipal forestry strategies.
The Project Manager & Data Lead will play an integral part in tree planting work including project coordination of all plantings and community engagement. As a successful candidate you are skilled in project management and thrive within a self-managed work environment. You will work collaboratively with the project team to coordinate the planting, design, implementation, and evaluation of tree plantings. You will regularly engage with residents and implement outreach strategies (digital and in-person) to inform and increase interest in the residential tree planting program.
You are skilled in using GIS and will regularly analyze canopy and social demographic data to help identify priority planting locations. You will manage the tracking of recently planted trees within the City’s assets management system. You will support the residential tree planting program by managing residential tree request data. Thus, you should feel comfortable and confident working in excel and manipulating large data sets. You will also take on a leadership role in developing the City’s Master Forestry Plan and advise on the data analysis for the plans development .
Examples of Duties
+ Manages project development and execution from inception to closure
+ Provides customer care to residents in the residential tree program
+ Collaborates with the communications team to implement digital engagement strategies
+ Assists with the implementation of organizational goals, initiatives and plans
+ Produces summarization reports for project team, leadership, and general public
+ Tracks and reports project milestones and status reports
+ Responsible for Data Management best practices, quality standards and advanced Data Management activities (Acquisitions, Reorganizations, Advanced Data Setup, etc.).
+ Manages all data related to the residential planting program
+ Ensures recently planted contractor trees are accurately tracked in the data management system
+ Implements procedures related to the secure and efficient handling and sharing of data.
+ Analyzes and interpret large amounts of data
+ Creates maps and runs analysis in ArcGIS
+ Advises on planting locations and strategy based on canopy analysis
Minimum Qualifications
High School graduation or G.E.D.; Bachelor's degree preferred
Minimum of 1-3 years of experience related to the field and/or job assignment
Experience with data visualization
Demonstrated success in analyzing and interpreting quantitative data and disparate data sources to make recommendations based on the findings
Skilled in Excel
Skilled in ArcGIS
Skills in computer-aided design and drafting software applications such as AutoCAD is a plus

The City of Detroit is pleased to continue to provide a medical plan option to our Administrative Special Services Employees for the 2020 plan year. This plan is provided by Blue Care Network of Michigan and utilizes their PCP Focus Network. This plan provides you with the opportunity to receive an enhanced level of benefits and pay less out of your paycheck for your medical plan. There are two important requirements that you should consider and understand if you should decide to enroll in this plan. You will have to choose a primary care physician that serves within the PCP Focus network. This primary care physician coordinates your care. The network includes over 22,000 Primary Care Physicians. There are also Wellness Requirements that you (the subscriber) must meet in order to remain in the enhanced level of benefit.
Administrative Special Services Staff (Exempt) are eligible for the following benefits:
+ CURRENT SICK LEAVE – Granted (3) months of continuous service. (1) day per month, not to exceed (12) days per year.
+ VACATION – Granted (1) day per pay period, not to exceed 20 days per fiscal year
+ PAID HOLIDAYS – Granted if paid for 600 straight time hours in the (12) months prior to the holiday
+ MILEAGE REIMBURSEMENT - Granted on same basis as regular employees.
+ WORKERS COMPENSATION – Covered by applicable laws.
+ UNEMPLOYMENT COMPENSATION - Covered by applicable laws.
+ HOSPITALIZATION – You are eligible to purchase healthcare benefits for yourself and your dependents under a group rate. You will be responsible for the full premium, no employer contribution will be applied. Please review the Health Care Plan Options Booklet for more detailed information.
+ This position is not eligible for the City Pension Plan, dental, vision, optical, death, life, disability, funeral, reserve sick or jury duty.
Administrative Special Services Staff (Non-Exempt) are eligible for the following benefits:
