Admissions Counselor

Position Summary:
The Admissions Counselor is part of the Office of Enrollment Services serving the recruitment, selection, and yield needs of the School of Medicine’s Office of Health Science education at Vanderbilt University; the MD Admissions Counselor will join the University’s Enrollment Affairs team. This collaborative partnership and innovative structure provide an ideal and dynamic environment to actively participate in the advancement of the partnership’s goals. This position reports to the Director of Admissions for the School of Medicine and serves as a primary point of contact regarding all the ways the public can apply for admission to the MD program at Vanderbilt.
About the Work Unit:
The Office of Enrollment Services (OES) at Vanderbilt University is a critical unit within University Enrollment Affairs that contributes greatly to the entire Vanderbilt community. The Office consists of a team that includes admissions, financial aid, and records. Its mission is to recruit, select, and enroll a diverse cohort of M.D. students who are intellectually curious, academically talented, and socially engaged. To accomplish this, members of the admissions team travels to attend fairs, talk to pre-health advisors, and speak to pre-med students. Admissions communicates systematically with hundreds of thousands of prospective students through traditional printed publications, the web, and other social media channels, and serves as the first point of contact for members of the public interested in the M.D. program.

Key Functions and Expected Performance:
+ Support admissions activities and application process, including interview day; maintain confidential electronic application folders.
+ Assist in the development of admissions programs such as mass mailings, orientation, campus visits, and student recruitment.
+ Counsel applicants regarding potential for admission to medical school; instruct applicants and pre-medical advisors as to the admissions process; educate applicants regarding financial aid options and eligibility.
+ Attend recruitment events at other colleges and universities and annual admissions related special events, present workshops on the application process.
+ Aid in building a strategic recruitment plan to recruit, admit, and yield a diverse student body.
+ The collaborative nature of Vanderbilt will allow the candidate the ability to work with various constituents across campus.
+ Perform other duties as assigned.
Supervisory Relationships:
This position does not have supervisory responsibility and reports administratively to the Director of Admissions.
Education and Certifications
+ A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education is necessary.
+ Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record. Vanderbilt University engages a third party to provide continuous up-to-date notifications regarding negative changes to motor vehicle records.
Experience and Skills:
+ As a salaried (exempt) position, ability to work weekends and nights is necessary, especially in key times of the recruitment cycle.
+ Strong interpersonal and communication skills are necessary.
+ Strong public speaking skills, with comfort in front of audiences of 150+, are necessary.
+ The ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community is necessary.
+ Ability to travel independently up to 4+ weeks annually is necessary.
+ Ability to use independent judgment and to manage and impart confidential information is necessary.
+ Skill in the use of the AMP CRM, word processing, spreadsheet, and/or presentation software is preferred.
+ Organizing and coordinating skills are preferred.
