Adult Education Instructor – ABE/HSE, CAMBA Education Center
Who We Are: CAMBA is a community of staff, volunteers, clients, donors, neighbors and partners who work together to build an inclusive New York City, where all children and adults have access to the resources and supports they need to thrive.  We take a comprehensive approach by offering more than 160 integrated programs in:  Education & Youth Development, Family Support, Job Training & Employment Support Services, Health, Housing, and Legal Services. We reach more than 65,000 individuals and families each year at our 90 locations, including 10,000 youth.  CAMBA serves a diverse cross section of New Yorkers from new mothers in Brownsville to job seekers in the Rockaways. More than half of our clients are immigrants and refugees from around the globe. Over 85% of our families are in living in poverty, reflecting the challenges faced by nearly 1.7 million New Yorkers today. Adult (http://www.esolcamba.org) Basic Education (ABE)/High School Equivalency (HSE) ), funded by the New York State Education Department (NYSED). CAMBA offers the classes to people who live or work in Brooklyn’s Flatbush/East Flatbush communities. We target people who are most in need of literacy services. For instance, we are an approved NYC Human Resources Administration (HRA) educational site. HRA allows clients to join our classes, and the center’s Case Managers report their attendance on a regular basis. Each year, about 400 people from Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, the Caribbean, and the United States enroll in our ABE/HSE classes. To be eligible for enrollment, an applicant must be at least 16 years old. In most cases, a student can attend a class Monday through Friday in the morning, afternoon, or evening for at least 3 hours per session. Our classes are primarily designed for students whose initial test scores place them in the first 4 NRS levels of ABE/HSE. In our ABE/HSE prep classes, we teach reading comprehension, writing (English grammar and letter/essay composition), math, test-taking, and workplace skills to students who are not enrolled or not required to be enrolled in secondary school. The majority of those students are preparing themselves to eventually take the General Educational Development (GED) exam, the state’s new High School Equivalency test. Applicants and/or students who have a 536 scale score in their TABE Reading Comprehension test are deemed eligible to take the Language Arts, the Science, or the Social Studies subtests of the GED. To take the Mathematics subtest of the GED, students are expected to have a scale score of at least 537 in their TABE Math test. Students who are deemed eligible to take any of the 4 GED subtests are scheduled to take the test by the Supervisor of Student Affairs.  The CAMBA Education Center is a state-certified High School Equivalency test preparation site but not a TASC testing center. Other students in our ABE/HSE preparation classes are often immigrants with at least a High School Diploma who may be preparing for a college entrance exam. In general, we provide our students with the type of educational, case management, career counseling, and technical services that can help them realize their family, educational, employment, and/or other personal goals.
