Advanced Practice Provider (APRN or PA) - Colon & Rectal Surgery

SUMMARY
The primary function of the Physician Assistant (PA)/Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) is to provide direct outpatient clinical care to colorectal surgery patients at the Texas Medical Center (TMC), and as needed at Houston Area Locations (HALs), in the Department of Colon and Rectal Surgery. This position demonstrates care that is effective, patient-centered, timely, efficient, and equitable for the treatment of health problems and the promotion of wellness. Duties and responsibilities outside of the outpatient setting will be limited to special circumstances.
The position is primarily designated for Outpatient clinical responsibilities in a Colorectal Surgery Clinic. The ideal candidate will have 1 - 2 years of current or recent APP Surgery experience. Open to new graduates.
JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES
Assesses, triages, and manages patient care as part of an interdisciplinary team. Performs procedures, prescribes treatment, and educates patients/families per institutional and state requirements. Manages pre- and post-operative care in collaboration with physicians, requiring knowledge of cancer, surgery, and wound healing. Provides personalized, patient-centered care with effective communication and problem solving. Obtains medical histories, performs exams, and conducts psychosocial assessments. Documents patient information per policy. Manages disease- and treatment-related complications with the attending physician. Orders consultations, diagnostics, and procedures as needed. Educates patients and families on colorectal oncology. Participates in clinical research and monitors side effects from investigational treatments. Participates in on-call rotations and communicates with care teams. Demonstrates knowledge and proficiency in colorectal surgery patient management. Maintains licensure and engages in ongoing education.
Other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION
Required: Degree requirements as defined by the Texas Board of Nursing (BON) or Texas State Board of Physician Assistant Examiners (TSBPAE) as required for clinical licensure as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse or Physician Assistant.
LICENSURE / CERTIFICATION
Required: Written authorization from the Texas Board of Nursing (BON) or Texas State Board of Physician Assistant Examiners (TSBPAE) to function as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse or Physician Assistant. Related authorization must be consistent with clinical practice area and patient population. Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification.
MAY BE REQUIRED: Eligible to be granted limited prescriptive authority by the State of Texas.
Must meet the American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) , ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) or PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) if working in one of following department: Pediatrics - Patient Care (113100).
