CORE JOB SUMMARY  

 

The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) – Fellow is provided specialized training in the management of assigned specialty patients in a variety of settings to ensure optimal quality of care and gaining necessary skill sets to develop and strengthen proficiencies within the clinical setting while learning to collaborate within a multidisciplinary team of healthcare providers. The APP - Fellow performs patient assessment to include medical history and physical exam in collaboration with the physician/preceptor, develops an appropriate plan of care in the direct management of patients with acute and chronic illnesses. The fellow displays competencies with preceptor and collaborating physicians. Works directly with staff, administration, patients, and families to ensure quality care across the continuum to evolve as an expert in selected practice areas. Integrates current knowledge of professional issues, trends in health care, and technological advances into scope of practice. Participates in the collections of research data, quality improvement, discharge planning, and coordination of patient care within the acute care areas.  

 

The Advanced Practice Provider Fellowship program at the University of Miami, Miller School of Medicine will complete rotations in a variety of clinical setting located within UHealth to include both inpatient and outpatient settings over a period of weeks, as assigned by specialty. 

 

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS  

 

Clinical Role 

Provides care to a select group of patients by determining and rendering advanced nursing and medical interventions.  

Assesses patients by interviewing and examining the patient, reviewing the patient’s medical history, physician’s diagnosis and orders, diagnostic test results (labs, x-ray, MRI, etc.) to determine medical diagnosis, plan of care, and monitor patient’s progress. 

Reviews medical records including physician/consultation notes, labs, and diagnostic tests results to formulate medical diagnoses. 

Collaborates with physician and preceptors through discussion and assessment of diagnoses to develop a plan of care and identifies expected outcomes, including interventions.  Documents and coordinates plan of care. 

Provides patient/family education regarding disease processes, treatment options, treatment outcomes, possible complications, medications, discharge planning, and lifestyle modification. 

Integrates current knowledge of professional issues, trends in health care, and technological advances into scope of practice. 

Collaborates with team members to ensure implementation of plan and employs physician orders per protocols.  

Assists in the management of family dynamics and coping mechanisms during acute and chronic phases of patient care. 

Evaluates the patient’s progress in attaining expected outcomes by follow-up with collaborating physician. 

Collaborates with members of the education department and units’ leadership team in planning educational opportunities and competency evaluation for nursing staff members. 

Conducts or participates in multidisciplinary rounds and ensures appropriate and quality care for patients. 

Able to progress from observer to an independently practicing APP with the guidance of their preceptor/physician collaborator 

Prioritize time to be able to manage clinical rotations, study time, and fellowship requirements 

Cross cover units/clinics independently when directed by Director, Fellowship program and preceptor input on readiness  

 

Research/Quality Improvement 

Initiates and/or participates in unit and/or hospital research activities. Utilizes research findings and nursing theories in clinical practice. Promotes evidence/knowledge-based nursing practice. Collects data for patient and program evaluation and participates in quality assessment and improvement activities. 

Authors or contributes to an article for publication in a professional journal or book. 

 

Professional Development 

Participates in 360° peer review process 

Submits annual protocols, revision to state nursing and medical boards 

Maintains national certification 

Specialty certification upon completion of fellowship if applicable 

Complete all competencies and training specified for all APPs working at UHealth 

Encouraged to attend to one national conference 

Presentation of clinical case studies at completion of each clinical specialty rotation 

Attendance to weekly educational grand rounds, disease specific team meetings, and educational sessions provided by department of Nursing and Advanced Practice 

 

Supervision Received 

Reports to collaborating physicians during clinical rotations and APP Mentor (assigned), and reports directly to leader, as assigned. 

Meets periodically with the Director, Fellowship Program  

Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets. 

 

Fellowship Program Requirements 

Completed an oral presentation on the topic of their choice 

Attempts to submit an article for publication 

Initiates and completes a quality improvement project in collaboration with department/unit leaders 

Sits for specialty certification if applicable to their area of specialty and licensure

CORE QUALIFICATIONS  

 

Education: 

Master’s degree in relevant field 

 

Certification and Licensing: 

Valid State of Florida APRN/PA License; BLS/ACLS Certifications  

 

Experience: 

No experience required

Ability to exercise sound judgment in making critical decisions. 

Skill in completing assignments accurately and with attention to detail. 

Ability to analyze, organize and prioritize work under pressure while meeting deadlines.
