Advising Coordinator
Job Summary: Radford University, a comprehensive public university of over 7,800 students, invites applicants for an Advising Coordinator position. The Advising Coordinator will serve as liaison and advocate between the Highlander Success Center and their assigned college. The position responsibilities related to this role include managing a caseload of students, attending college leadership team and curriculum committee meetings to discuss advising issues and provide updates on advising policies, procedures, and technology. The coordinator will supervise at least one advisor and is responsible for resolving complex problems related to curriculum, course prerequisites, and eligibility by referring to the university catalog and other appropriate resources. This position will also oversee the assigned college academic petition process for requests for exceptions to university and college policies and procedures. The coordinator will review and edit the Highlander Success Center brochures, major/minor degree progress sheets, and other publications related to the assigned college curricula and advising; maintain accurate data for reports and informed decision-making; assist with the collection of data and analysis of enrollment, persistence, and progression patterns of students; participate in other relevant data collection and analysis supporting the monitoring, notification, and regular interaction with students and advisors regarding academic standing and student success. The Advising Coordinator will provide appropriate and effective academic advising to an assigned caseload of students as well as integrated academic advising outside of the caseload to include prospective, current, and former students within the Highlander Success Center. The position responsibilities include assessment and evaluation of academic abilities and goals, and advising of students regarding academic programs and changes, developing academic plans and class schedules, assisting students in major, minor, and career exploration, presenting academic information to new student orientation groups (including both students and families), analyzing applications, transfer evaluations, and transcripts for advising purposes, maintaining appropriate records (including the utilization of the university’s online student engagement tool), communicating effectively with co-faculty advisors and mentors, and sustaining an environment of academic and professional excellence for students, faculty, and staff. The Advising Coordinator supports student life, learning, and success through student advocacy, academic coaching, and course scheduling, customer service, campus and community referrals, student and faculty engagement, and institutional outreach. The Advising Coordinator also collaborates with the Highlander Success Center team as well as all university departments to ensure student advocacy and a sense of belonging within the university, to support student retention and persistence endeavors. Required Qualifications: + Advanced degree and extensive experience in education, counseling, or advising or equivalent training, education, or experience. + Experience in planning and implementing programming for new students, student, and faculty engagement and persistence activities, and professional development. + Excellent communication, interpersonal, organizational, customer service, and time management skills. + Demonstrated ability to make independent judgments, analyze and solve problems, manage multiple tasks, and work independently as a self-starter. + Experience using current office software such as Microsoft Office. + Demonstrated ability to work empathetically with people from diverse backgrounds on an interprofessional team. Preferred Qualifications: + Experience interpreting, and applying university, state, and federal policies/procedures. + Experience in advising in a higher education academic setting. + Previous experience/knowledge working with Banner, DegreeWorks, eVA, Starfish or another student records software system. + Participation in the delivery of in-service training to practitioners on academic advising and information procedures. + Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports. + Knowledge of new students, student advocacy, and student persistence and retention issues and strategies. + Knowledge of or experience in the College of Business and Economics. + Experience successfully supervising professional staff.
