Advisor, Technical

The Technical Advisor role works as a technical Subject Matter Expert (SME) across one or more key engineering disciplines. This is typically an individual contributor role and provides direct engineering contribution and support to various technical teams and business teams within ABS. The role may have limited supervisory responsibilities related to projects or small technical teams. 

What You Will Do:

Works as an engineering/technical Subject Matter Expert (SME) supporting ABS Core Enabling Market Processes. Provides direct engineering work and support to various internal engineering technical teams and business teams related to one or more specific technical engineering areas such as but not limited to Materials Science & Welding, Sensors / Nano-technology, Data Science & Data Analytics, Robotics and Autonomy, Dynamic Stability, Ice Mechanics / Ice Structural Interaction, Polar Shipping, and Offshore Operations, Structural Analysis & Assessment, Non-Linear Finite Element Analysis, Computational Fluid Dynamics, Vessel Performance & Energy Efficiency, Vessel Systems Integration, Vessel Energy Efficiency, Polar Shipping, and Offshore Operations, Controls and Automation, Engine/Thruster/Hybrid Propulsion Technology, Production and Drilling Operations, Noise and Vibration, Station keeping (DP, mooring systems, etc.), Specific ship type (i.e. Tankers, Container Ships). Completes and supports engineering design review (Plan Approval) as required Provides technical engineering support in regulatory interpretations and external standards development as appropriate Supports and influences future ABS research in the specific subject matter area as related to industry requirements and initiatives Represents ABS in key industry committees and events as an SME and industry resource Research and/or coordinate engineering research projects within the area of expertise to support ABS through industry presentations and White Papers. Acts as an engineering and technical coach/mentor to provide guidance and support for peers, managers, and colleagues requiring technical advice around expertise.

What You Will Need:

Education and Experience

A Bachelor level degree in an applicable engineering curriculum, including but not limited to Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, and/or Structural Engineering, is required A Master’s level degree in one or more of the above Bachelor level curricula is preferred. Ten (10) years of demonstrated engineering/technical experience within one or more key areas of expertise required. Three (3) or more years of experience in an industry technical environment at a shipyard, design/consulting office, shipping/oil company, or classification society.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Demonstrated engineering/technical expertise in one or more key designated subject matter areas Demonstrated industry experience working cross-functionally, providing technical engineering solutions on projects and service requirements Working knowledge of business management systems, processes, and procedures. Strong technical leadership related to team support, internal engineering project work, and initiatives Demonstrated solution-oriented customer/client relations skills Strong capability in building and maintaining professional relationships internally and externally with the Company. Well-developed written and verbal communication skills.  Experience in public speaking in a technical engineering environment to support solutions to industry, ship owners, and shipyards. Ability to obtain a working knowledge of the ABS Health, Safety, Quality, and Environmental Management Systems.

Reporting Relationships:

The incumbent typically reports to the Director level engineering management but may report to Manager or Vice President level management as required by business or geography.  If required by business or geography, the position may report through senior-level operational management (i.e., Survey) or a Center of Expertise (i.e., Chief Surveyor Office or CDO). This position typically does not have managerial duties but may have direct supervisory responsibilities for small teams related to projects or process initiatives.
