Advisor - Peptide Discovery (San Diego, CA)

The Biotechnology Discovery Research group at Lilly’s Biotechnology Center in San Diego discovers medicines that address significant unmet needs by integrating biology with innovative scientific capabilities in peptide, protein engineering and computational sciences.  We collaborate with colleagues in both the discovery and development organizations, including scientists in therapeutic area biology, biomolecule formulation and developability, ADME, Toxicology, PK/PD, Statistics, Computational Sciences, clinical development, and more.

This is a technical position in the Peptide Discovery Team within Lilly Biotechnology Center in San Diego.  The individual should demonstrate expertise in Display technology platforms to lead/support peptide discovery.  The candidate will be an integral part of an innovative and interdisciplinary team that utilizes phage and mRNA display platforms to enable de novo peptide discovery and support peptide optimization at Lilly.  The successful candidate must show a track record of innovation behavior, scientific curiosity, and desire to learn and implement new technologies and platforms. Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills are required for this position. 

Key objectives and deliverables
 

- Design and perform phage and mRNA display selections to identify target specific peptide therapeutics. 

- Design new libraries and codon boxes for Phage and mRNA display selections.

- Hit characterization and optimization using different display technologies.  The responsibility expands to improving affinity, potency, solubility, and introducing drug-like attributes of therapeutic peptides. 

- Integrate computational and structure-based information with display technologies for hit-to-lead optimization.

- Collaborate and effectively communicate with project teams, cross-functional teams, and the Peptide Discovery team members. 

- Present data on regular basis in various internal meetings

- Diligently maintain detailed, and well-organized records of experiments using Electronic Notebooks.
 

Requirements

Ph.D and/or postdoc in Chemistry, Biomedical Science, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, or a related subject with 0 to 4 years of industry experience and a strong focus on affinity driven selections to identify peptide hits and/or peptide synthesis.

Master’s degree with a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in industry or Bachelor's degree with 10+ years of experience.


Additional Preferences

Deep expertise in the incorporation of non-canonical amino acids into peptides or proteins using in vitro translation systems.

Deep understanding of molecular biology techniques to construct small- and large-scale peptide display libraries.

Knowledge and experience in peptide chemistry and synthesis.

Knowledge and experience in the use of computational methods during peptide hit-to-lead optimization. Knowledge with FACS and flow cytometry.

Self-motivated, strong work ethic, independent and results-oriented.

Ability to work independently as well as in cross-functional team settings.

Self-driven, imaginative, organized, focused, and able to work as part of a high-performing, high-paced team.
