Actual compensation will depend on a candidate’s education, experience, skills, and geographic location.  The anticipated wage for this position is

$135,000 - $198,000

The Discovery Chemistry Research & Technologies organization within Lilly Research Laboratories is seeking a highly skilled and experienced scientist, enterprise thinker, and team player to join the Synthetic Technologies (SynTech) group located at the Lilly Corporate Center, Indianapolis, IN.

Keep safety as the top priority and provide expertise to teams around HSE as it relates to chemistry route identification and development.

Innovate, accelerate and deliver portfolio impact through creating and/or applying ‘state of the art’ synthetic organic chemistry methodologies and technologies to bridge Medicinal Chemistry and Early Process.

Proactively look for opportunities to impact and influence the innovation teams deliver by providing increased access to and expertise in “state-of-the-art“ synthetic chemistry methodologies and technologies.

Collaborate with portfolio teams to assume responsibility for defining and implementing an innovative Material Plan Strategy to ensure high quality candidate decisions are delivered in an efficient and timely fashion.

Develop, optimize and deploy – bridging Medicinal Chemistry and Early Process – synthetic routes to provide safe, efficient and robust synthetic protocols for SAR, intermediates and scale-up that help drive fast-paced research programs

Engage with medicinal chemistry colleagues to drive the design and delivery of novel compounds to advance SAR.

Serve as and seek opportunities to deploy enterprise subject-matter-expertise in classical and contemporary ‘state of the art’ synthetic organic chemistry methodologies and technologies.

Provide technical leadership/oversight to internal and external resources to ensure timely delivery of key materials (intermediates, final compounds to fund preclinical tox studies).

Ensure compliance regarding material and physical properties characterization of all compounds delivered for use in preclinical toxicology studies.

Work closely with Early Process to ensure the smooth flow of drug candidates into clinical development.

Deliver portfolio impact from the bench.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required Education and Experience:

PhD in Synthetic Organic Chemistry (or related field) or BS/MS in Synthetic Organic chemistry with 5+ years relevant experience in small molecule organic synthesis

Additional expected skills:

Understanding of the drug discovery process & early process chemistry development

Demonstrated deep understanding of mechanistic and engineering requirements for safely executing chemistry at the kilogram scale.

Scientific creativity and ability to work independently solving problems through careful experimental design, analysis of complex data sets and mechanistic insight.

Excellent English language oral and written communication skills, ability to engage effectively as a team player in a multidisciplinary and international environment.

Proficient use of Microsoft Office applications as well as ChemDraw, Scifinder, Reaxys and other scientific data tools to identify relevant scientific literature.

Strong work ethic. Scientific curiosity. Can do, will do attitude.

A record of scientific contributions including peer reviewed publications, presentations, and/or patents

Example(s) of leading projects and/or initiatives, coordinating multiple scientific activities and team members simultaneously.

A general understanding of what it takes to translate lab chemistry to the pilot plant is desirable.
