Northrop Grumman Aeronautics Systems (AS) sector is seeking an Air Vehicle (AV) Chief Engineer for program integration and execution. This key leadership role is based out of Melbourne, FL. 

 

The selected candidate is responsible for the technical baseline development and control of the air vehicle component of a major weapon system. This includes responsibility and accountability in the following areas: airframe design and structural analysis, air vehicle subsystems (electrical, hydraulic, ECS, fuel, alighting gear, flight controls, mechanisms, etc.) requirements and integration, and propulsion integration. The individual will in partner with the Program engineering organization and Execution IPTs to support the design of the air vehicle aligned to performance requirements as well as associated verification testing. Emphasis is placed on design development and release management across a complete weapon system including various required test articles. Additional experience with air vehicle supplier management and supplier issue resolution to maintain technical and program performance. Recent and relevant experience in Model Based System Engineering and understanding of digital threads, digital twins, and integration across air vehicle, software, and avionics design and analysis tools.

The Air Vehicle Chief Engineer will be responsible for leading the AV program organization by championing diversity, equity, and inclusion to foster a high-performing, motivated, and engaged culture. This leader will also be responsible for establishing the vision and strategy for the AV program organization and collaborating broadly up and across AS engineering leadership in pursuit of collective business objectives. 

 

Key Responsibilities include:  

Providing leadership, shaping the AV IPT strategic vision and direction 

Leading successful execution of AV work scope on all efforts, and as part of this successful execution partnering with program managers to collect meaningful metrics and collaborate to use those metrics to improve processes and tools that will result in improved affordability and quality 

Identify program risk and plans to manage the risk. Address performance shortfalls through root cause and corrective action assessments and develop containment and long-term corrective action plans that include long-term verification of successful improvement and sharing of lessons learned across the engineering organization 

Drive improved employee engagement and appreciation through verbal, written, and tangible recognition, events, and personal interactions 

Oversee program/project reviews, independent technical reviews, NCTA and indirect activities, process improvement plans, proposal review and signoff, and capital planning and management 

Support the yearly cycles for promotions, merits, and bonuses that affordably balances the experience base across the organization, and achieves retention objectives

Basic Qualifications: 

Bachelor of Science degree in a STEM discipline and 12 years of related professional and/or military experience, OR a Master’s Degree in a STEM discipline and 10 years of related professional and/or military experience. 

Minimum of 6 years of engineering leadership experience, with at least 2 years being in Air Vehicle 

Experience in a technical leadership and technical management roles – inclusive of technical baseline management (including product support) as chairman of the Technical Review Board (TRB), leading and ensuring major technical reviews (SRR, SFR, PDR, CDR, TRR, FRR), safety of flight and airworthiness approval, and technical risk, TPMs, and opportunity management 

Experience with working directly with DoD customers  

Your ability to transfer and maintain the final adjudicated government Secret clearance, and any program access(es) required for the position within a reasonable period of time, as determined by the company, and the ability to obtain a Top Secret clearance 

Ability to travel as needed (approx. 25%) 

 
Preferred Qualifications: 

Active DoD Top Secret/SCI clearance 

20 years of engineering experience  

Experience in flight test planning and execution, data reduction, and data analysis 

Experience in air vehicle development including structural design/analysis, loads and dynamics, aero performance, hydraulics, ECS, propulsion, landing gear, fuel systems, and flight controls. Includes supplier management for procured subsystems. 

Experience and understanding of best practices in program management, configuration data management, manufacturing, and product support 

Experience implementing action plans based on metrics and/or root cause/corrective actions 

MS or MBA degree 

Experience across lifecycles including Research and Design, Product Development or New Product Introduction, Production, and Sustainment 

Demonstrated success as an engineering leader over large teams 

CPLM or other Product Lifecycle Management environments 

Demonstrated success in product development (internal and external)  

Exceptional communication skills 

Salary Range: $197,500.00 - $296,300.00

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
