Compensation

Compensation includes a base salary of $77,800.00 - $116,800.00. The base salary may vary within the anticipated base pay range based on factors such as the ultimate location of the position and the selected candidate’s knowledge, skills, and abilities. Position may be eligible for additional compensation that may include an incentive program.

Job Description

The AJC’s mission is to be the most essential and engaging source of news and information for the people of Atlanta, of Georgia and the South. To achieve that mission, we are transforming ourselves from a storied daily newspaper into a modern media company. Where reporters, product ninjas, video/audio masters, digital gurus and many more are delivering work across diverse creative platforms, industries and borders.

This reporter writes and produces AM ATL, the AJC's flagship morning newsletter. Every morning, readers in Atlanta wake up to A.M. ATL, a 5-minute skimmable read focused on elevating conversational, geographically centered news Atlantans can use, share, react to and act upon each day. The writer of the AJC’s flagship newsletter works closely with the Newsletter Editor and senior leadership to reflect the priorities of the AJC’s existing and prospective users through smart commentary and curation. The ideal candidate has a strong voice and willingness to build community via newsletter, ideally with strong existing community relationships. They will be obsessed with crafting the perfect subject line and finding the right content mix. They are reliable, collaborative and flexible to changes as the AJC continues its digital transformation. Writing and producing the daily file can include reporting, art selection, collecting user-generated content, and working within an email and content management system.

Specific duties include:

Writing original content for the AJC’s daily flagship morning newsletter, in an authentically Atlanta voice that appeals across the spectrum of our diverse cityCurating the need-to-know stories of the day across sections and news arcsCollaborating with reporters, editors and programming team members to find the best reader hooksCreating other content under the A.M. ATL brand, such as emergency news briefings

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree preferably in journalism or related fieldWith a BA, at least 6 years of experience as a digital producer in a fast-paced operational role. The right candidate could also have a different combination, such as a master’s degree and 4+ years’ experience; a Ph.D. and 1+years of experience; or 10 years’ experience in a related fieldExcellent written and verbal communication skills and an understanding of news judgement and journalism ethics are of paramount importance.An ability to take constructive criticismPassion and belief in local, regional and statewide journalism and its role as a societal change agentFamiliarity and experience in using audience metricsReliable automobile transportation required.Reliable internet service for remote work environment required.Ability to work weekend and unusual hours as dictated by news events

Preferred Experience in one or more of the following: 

Newspapers, magazines, media, technology, or related field Experience working in a breaking news environmentSocial, interactive, or digital media 

*While this position allows hybrid work, it will be based in metro Atlanta and will require some days in the AJC’s office. The job requires an early (5 a.m.) start time. Some weekend and night work will be required.
