Defining Characteristics or Attributes (AACN,2017) are distinctive to professional RN practice in ambulatory care settings:
1. Use critical reasoning and astute clinical judgment to expedite appropriate care and treatment, in an environment where the patient may present with complex problems or potentially life-threatening conditions.
2. Provide quality care across the life span to individuals, families, caregivers, groups, populations and communities
3. Occur across the continuum in a variety of settings including hospital based OP clinics/centers, ambulatory and diagnostic procedural centers, telehealth centers, community based clinics, solo and group practices and patient homes
4. Interact with patients during face to face encounters or through a variety of telecommunication encounters to assess, triage, provide nursing consultation and perform follow-up and care coordination.
5. Focus on patient safety and quality of care by applying appropriate nursing interventions such as identifying and clarifying patient needs, performing approved procedures or protocols, conducting health education, promoting patient advocacy, coordinating nursing and other health services, assisting the patient to navigate the health care system, and evaluating patient outcomes.
6. Encounters can occur once or as a series of occurrences at any one time, in single or group settings.
7. Act as partner, advocate and advisor, assists and supports patient/families in the management of their health care, respecting their culture and values, individual needs, health goals, and treatment preferences.
8. Facilitate continuity of care using the nursing process, works in collaboration with the entire health care team, and participates in the coordination of and access to health care services and community resources across the care continuum.
9. Is knowledgeable about and provides leadership in the clinical and managerial operations of the organization.
10. Participate in ambulatory care design, administration and evaluation of nursing services within the ambulatory organization in accordance with federal requirements, state laws and nurse practice acts and scope, regulatory standards, and institutional and ambulatory policies and procedures.
11. Design, administer and evaluate nursing services in accord with relevant federal requirements, state laws and nurse practice acts, regulatory standards, and institutional policies and procedures.
12. Provide operational accountability for and coordination of nursing services in the ambulatory environment, including skill mix, and delegation to licensed and unlicensed nursing personnel.
13. Apply the provisions of the ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses to their own professional practice and hold their colleagues accountable for same.
