General Summary:

Under the general direction of the physician, assists with the processing of patients in an ambulatory/office setting including diagnostic procedures.  Responsible for general clinical and clerical duties associated with direct and indirect patient care.  Reports to the Office Manager/Supervisor, physician and/or Registered Nurse.  Provides care to pediatric, adult and geriatric patients.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Must possess knowledge and skills normally acquired through completion of an approved Licensed Practical Nurse program.

Must possess current CPR/BLS certification and current Licensed Practical Nurse licensure in the State of Ohio.

Two years LPN experience in a physician office or ambulatory care setting preferred. Direct experience in an outpatient setting preferred.

Must possess interpersonal skills sufficient to interact effectively with patients, client companies, other hospital personnel, a variety of vendors, lab personnel and insurance companies.

Must have knowledge of use and operation of standard office equipment, typewriter, copier, calculator, FAX, etc.

Work requires the ability to learn computer skills.  Knowledge of computer data entry preferred.

Three to six months on-the-job training may be necessary for full familiarity with office and MHP policies and procedures.

Must possess ability to adjust to varying work levels in order to complete multiple tasks based on office’s daily needs.

Working conditions:

Works in a normal patient care environment with occasional exposure to communicable disease.

Work requires prolonged walking, standing, with some lifting, stooping, bending, and pushing.  Use of proper body mechanics required.

Works flexible hours to meet office activity requirements.

May work in multiple office within the division.

Performs and provides direct patient care including medical history review, vital signs, height and weight, wound care, dressing changes, etc.  Maintains patient flow in clinical area.  Reports any abnormal findings to appropriate personnel.

Principle Duties and Responsibilities:

Maintains appropriate records including accurate and legible chart documentation, review of chart for current information, patient notes, problem lists, dictation, etc.  Prepares charts for third party reviews. Assists physician with procedures, treatments, minor surgeries and exams as needed.  Must have knowledge of sterile technique. 

Administers oral, subcutaneous, and IM medications as ordered and directed by the physician.  Administers skin testing (PPD) intradermal, as ordered.

May assist with IV therapy as delegated by physician and/or R.N. in accordance with Ohio Revised Code 4723-17-09.

Performs some basic triage functions with referral to appropriate medical professional.

Responsible for adequate and accurate patient education including medications, wound care, dressing changes, etc.

Reviews daily schedule to prepare charts for daily appointments.  Follow up on missed appointments.

Maintains inventory and stocks exam rooms.  Maintains patient care equipment in good working order to ensure quality control procedures in accordance with regulatory guidelines.

May act as office safety officer (OSHA) or patient services coordinator when needed.

May be required to float to other offices based on staffing needs.
