Job Description for Pediatric Surgery RN
A Pediatric Surgery Registered Nurse serves as a vital member of the surgical care team, providing comprehensive support for both clinical and administrative functions. This position requires a unique combination of clinical expertise and administrative skills to ensure optimal patient care coordination.
Administrative Duties
Process and manage MyChart messages and telephone triage, including soft transfer rotation
Handle documentation including FMLA paperwork, letters of medical necessity, and school letters
Submit and manage prior authorizations through CoverMyMeds
Coordinate with external facilities for records and image transfers
Manage surgical clearances and prescreening for surgeon clinics
Communicate test results to families
Coordinate with administrative assistants for appointment scheduling
Manage DME support and related documentation
Clinical Support
Provide coverage for surgeon clinics as needed
Conduct health histories and physical examinations for new patients
Assist with in-clinic procedures
Review after-visit summaries and educational materials
Assist NICU circumcisions
Handle post-operative concerns through direct communication with surgeons
Support patient care during bowel management camp
Specialized Teams
Wound/Ostomy Care
Serve as secondary educator for gastrostomy tubes
Provide clinic support for complex wound and ostomy cases, as needed
Manage DME orders and troubleshooting
Offer outpatient family support via MyChart and telephone
Serve as backup educator for specialized procedures (ctube/Malone/enema/irrigation)
Preferred experience requirements for an interview:
Ambulatory Experience…
Telephone triage experience
Minimum 2-year nursing experience
Including at least 1 year of pediatric experience
Minimum Qualifications:
1. Bachelor’s degree in nursing or higher preferred
2. Current licensure as a registered nurse in the State of Illinois.
3. Basic Life Support certification from the American Heart Association.
4. Ability to effectively communicate with patients/families, physicians and hospital staff.
