Pay Range

$6,400  - $7,580  Monthly

This is the lowest to highest salary we in good faith believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting; pay will not be below any applicable local minimum wage.  An employee’s position within the salary range will be based on several factors including, but not limited to, specific competencies, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, seniority, geographic location, performance, and business or organizational needs.

Job Description

We have an opening for an Academic Graduate Appointee to participate in projects supporting a variety of Laboratory missions. As part of a multi-disciplinary team within the Materials Science Division, you will perform analytical chemistry techniques, including sample preparation, high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), ion chromatography (IC), and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS).  You will actively support and be expected to participate in a forensic chemistry project where you will develop a process for separation of different hydro-carbon families from an aggregate sample with the goal of identification and quantification by mass percent with 10% error of the different types. 

In this role you will:

Prepare samples for analytical characterizationPerform established HPLC methods for routine samplesCharacterize ion content of samples using ion chromatographyDetermine elemental composition of samples using ICP-MSDevelop a separation process of different chemically similar insoluble hydrocarbons from aggregate samplesKeep an accurate and detailed laboratory notebook; generate, organize, and analyze experimental data; and participate in research planning. Prepare progress reports and presentations to supervisor/mentor and project teams.Provide technical support to engineers and scientists in research and development projects.Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications

 

BS in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or in a related field.Experience performing wide-ranging experiments in a chemistry laboratory setting.Knowledge of general laboratory fundamentals and best practices.Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to communicate technical information effectively with technicians, peers, and managers.Experience operating PC and/or Macintosh computers to collect, analyze and document scientific results.Ability to interact effectively with a diverse range of administrative and technical staff in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment.

 

Qualifications we desire

MS in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or in a related field.Experience in general chemistry laboratory settings.Experience in analytical chemistry techniques such as HPLC, IC, and ICP-MSExperience with separation techniques such as density fractionation or chromatography Additional Information

Security Clearance

This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.  If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. Also, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.
