Job Summary:

The Minnesota Star Tribune is seeking an Analytics Engineer to join our growing Data & Analytics team. Reporting to our Head of Data & Analytics, you will play a pivotal role in enabling our advanced analytics and data science initiatives. A successful candidate for this position will be passionate about database design & modeling, excited to be a part of the formation of a new data science & advanced analytics practice, and an evangelist for data best practices throughout the organization.

The initial focus of this position will be to establish and define data modeling & activation, data quality and documentation from a diverse and disparate set of systems to build a single source of truth for our business intelligence and data science. This is an opportunity to develop the core data capabilities from the ground up for a complex data business, helping to acquire more subscribers, build more engaging content, and market our advertising in a more engaging, modern approach.

Key Responsibilities:

Developing, testing, implementing, and documenting data models. Optimize analysts and data scientist’s use of data. Ensure uptime and data quality are aligned with business needs. Develop data dictionaries, governance, and other related documentation. Contributing to and following best practices for data consumption. Optimizing data processes and pipelines to improve efficiency. Identifying opportunities to reduce complexity and increase efficiency in data models. Troubleshooting and resolving data issues to ensure data quality and reliability. Ensuring high-quality data output that is tested, automated, scalable, and documented.

Key Requirements to be Successful:

Extensive technical experience using Domo, Tableau, or Looker. Emphasis on modeling and preparing data for analysis and data science. Extensive ETL methodologies and experience with modeling tools to design and implement data models. Experience using a modern data warehouse (e.g., Snowflake or BigQuery) for scalable and efficient data processing. Expertise in SQL and experience with database technologies (e.g., PostgreSQL, MySQL, Redshift). Record of extensive data documentation, QA/QC, and data governance design. Ability to work confidently with modern software engineering tools like the command line, version control, testing, and code reviews. Previous use of orchestration tools similar to Airflow, DBT Cloud, or Fivetran. Familiarity with AWS cloud platforms and data services. Comfortable reading and extracting data transformation processes using Python. Problem-solving skills with the ability to understand business problems and communicate technical solutions. Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively in a distributed team environment.
