Anesthesia Technician UH: Anesthesiology

Job Summary: The Anesthesia Technician works under the direction of the licensed anesthesia provider and is a prominent member of the anesthesia care team, assists the licensed anesthesia provider in clinical settings where anesthesia is administered. Performs duties within the practice standards as described by the American Society of Anesthesiology Technologists and Technicians (ASATT). Uses sterile technique to set-up the anesthesia table, anesthesia machines, equipment taking into account the type of anesthesia to be administered, age and size of patient, and anesthesia provider preference. Assists anesthesia provider during the procedure as needed. Assists with room turn over, removes and properly disposes of all anesthesia supplies and equipment. Prepares and processes all anesthesia-related items that require cleaning, disinfection, decontamination. Inspects instruments and equipment for damage and initiates appropriate repair and replacement process. Follows policies, procedures, and guidelines to protect self and others from contamination. Performs daily maintenance, calibration, and quality control checks on anesthesia machines and equipment as per manufacture recommendations and hospital policy. Inventories supplies and ensures OR suites and procedure rooms and anesthesia carts are stocked and that back up carts and machines are ready for use. Works closely with anesthesiologist, nurse anesthetists, operating room staff and leadership. May be required to participate in on-call schedule as needed based on business needs. Performs other duties as needed.

Education and Experience: High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) required. Two years of experience as an anesthesia technician, in hospital Certifies Nurses assistant and or Medial Assistant, and or Emergency Medical Technician experience preferred.

Knowledge and Skills: Knowledge of practice standards according to American Society of Anesthesiology Technologists and Technicians (ASATT). Familiar with infection control, OSHA, Universal Precautions, Waste Management, AORN and AAMI standards. Exhibits professional behavior at all times. Has good time management skills and is able to work in a fast paced frequently changing stressful environment. Continually expands knowledge base about anesthesia equipment and supplies. Able to: read; write legibly; speak in English (and Spanish preferred) with professional quality; use computer and software programs necessary to the position; troubleshoot and calibrate patient care equipment. Able to relate and communicate positively, effectively, and professionally with others; be assertive and consistent in following and/or enforcing policies; work calmly and respond courteously when under pressure; lead, supervise, teach, and collaborate; accept direction. Able to communicate effectively in English in person, in writing, and on the telephone; think critically; work independently with minimal supervision; perform basic math functions; manage multiple assignments effectively; work well under pressure; problem solve; organize and prioritize workload; recall information with accuracy; pay close attention to detail. Able to distinguish colors and smells as necessary for patient care; hear sufficiently for general conversation in person and on the telephone; identify and distinguish various sounds associated with the work place/patient care; see adequately to read computer screens, medical records, and written documents necessary to position; discern temperature variances through touch.

Licensures and Certifications: Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association required. American Society of Anesthesia Technologists and Technicians Certification preferred.
