SUMMARY:
A large clinical research team is opening a brand new, exciting opportunity to start your career within research for an Animal Research Care Tech in Lafayette, IN. Being a vital member of the team, as it's supporting crucial projects for innovative and advanced solutions for current and future problems in animal and human health. You will provide professional husbandry and care to a variety of laboratory animals, including rodents, rabbits, sheep, poultry, and barn housing. You will perform husbandry and health checks for all species on campus, change cages, clean stalls, and prepare animal caging components. Additionally, you will use specialized equipment such as rack washers, autoclaves, steam guns, and skid steers. This role involves working with animals exposed to biological, chemical, and radiation hazards and may include occasional euthanasia of rodents. You will also perform breeding services as needed and begin learning advanced technical skills to support researchers and Gnotobiotics.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Working hands-on with Vets and other research staff to ensure animals are getting the top level of care possible. There is a manual aspect to this role and it also requires a high level of attention to detail in order to follow all research and trial policies.We have some teams that focus more with large animals and some teams that work more with smaller animals (mice, rabbits, rodents, etc).Other than the types of animals you would work with, the daily tasks are the same on each team.About 40% of the day will be providing animal care, another 40% will be maintaining their housing and living environments20% - 30% is training in more advanced technical skills to support researchers and Gnotobiotics, recording data, quality assurance, animal health and welfare monitoring, along with other administrative tasks.ResponsibilitiesPrimary Housing Maintenance Animal Health and Welfare MonitoringCage Wash/Preparations Breeding Services Record Keeping and Quality Assurance Other Duties as RequiredQUALIFICATIONS:
1) High school diploma or equivalent required
2) 6 months or more performing animal care
3) Must be able to have indirect and direct physical contact with multiple species of animals
4) Must have interest and ability to perform physically demanding job duties
5) Experience from Farming, Barn hand, 4H, etc. experience
NICE TO HAVES - Not Required:
1) Animal certifications (LAT, ALAT, LATG, etc) or animal schooling (vet tech, AS or BS studies, etc) is a huge plus but not required.
2) Animal research experience is also a huge plus
Work is onsite within different facilities that house the Laboratory Animal Program, comprised of four departments. The role involves working directly with animals and interacting with various team members. Specific tasks are performed in dedicated rooms, and consultants will spend the majority of their time in animal rooms. The team currently cares for about 500 animals.
